New monitor time - Suggestions please

Hi all, First off, i apologise. This is another one of the those threads.

I've been doing a fair bit of looking around this week at possible new monitors to get myself, and would love to get your opinions on what would be the best choice.

Have been looking at screens in around the £150-£180 range, 22-24 inch, 1920x1080, want to hook it upto a PS3 so HDMI needed + Audio out for connecting to decent speakers would be nice, nice amount of downward tilt would also be nice so i don't need to have it sat on a ring binder folder like my current monitor to get a decent viewing angle from bed (but not essential as the folder works)

As for LED backlighting and TN/VA/ panels (IPS is pretty much out of the question for budget), i'm personally not overly fussed, i'm more looking for a best monitor for the money bargain but i am open to being persuaded if you think any of the features should be a must have. I wont pretend to be anymore knowledgable on each of them other than generalising. LED = Better Heat and Eco, TN = Faster, but not as great a picture quality and VA = Slower response, better image quality. Thats about all i know.


Ok, it'll be used for general pc tasks, watching films (tv too if i get my tv card installed) and gaming on. Both from PC and PS3

The screens i had been considering so far are:
Samsung P2450H (First one i really came across that ticked all the boxes and had good feedback.
Iiyama E2409HDS Again good reviews, nicer thinner bezel, seem to be quite popular from what i've been reading.
Iiyama B2409HDS This one came about due to the confusing nature of the naming schemes of all monitor manufacturers. I think it's essentially the exact same monitor as the E2409HDS but with a height adjustable and 90degree rotation stand, please correct me if i'm wrong. If it is the same and i do go the Iiyama route i then have to decide if i want to pay the £30 premium which may help with the ring binder situation mentioned above.
BenQ G2420HD Probably the sleekist looking of the lot, BenQ do the LED backlit G2420HDBL too, but for some reason they don't do a version of the LED monitor with a HDMI socket.

I did also look at the BenQ EW2420 but as to be expected it hasn't had great reviews about it's ability for gaming on due to it's VA panel, so have kind of resided myself to having to probably go TN at the moment. I've not really got around to looking at any other manufacturers than those yet, so i may have missed out on some great screens. please point these out if i have.

I honestly wish I could help, as I've been looking at monitors myself recently, but as you've said, it's a pain just working out what monitor is which through trying to decode model numbers. And having only ever seen TN panels, I am intrigued by VA panels but couldn't tell you if the reports of bad ghosting are accurate or not.

All I can help with really is to say that I'm also sure that the only difference between the iiyama B2409HDS and the E2409HDS is the additional tilt and height adjustment on the B2409. And the price of course.

One thing I would say is to consider 16:10 monitors. The extra 120 pixels you have vertically make a HUGE difference in terms of screen real estate for general PC duties and PC gaming.

Trust me, i'd much rather go for a 1920x1200 if i could. Thanks to the Full HD craze that just doesn't seem to be an option for a decent sub £200 screen.

If you want range in motion, tilt, and all that goodness I suggest you look at the ultimate range of motions from the BenQ XL2410T or the BenQ BL2400PT.

The main reason why I recommended these 2 monitors is because both them have a similar casing/stand design to allow the utmost flexibility and comfort to your viewing angles or adjustments. Although both these monitors seem a bit out of your budget, I thought it'd be worth recommending. And the BL2400PT has the same performance as the EW2420. The EW2420 will carry more connection ports + a different stand.

They are lovely monitors but way over the OP's budget.

Maybe a standard 4:3 aspect ratio monitor? Widescreen is way overrated in my book!

iv been using a samsung 2493hm for a few years now and love it, the screen did blow a capacitor last summer but i phoned them up and had a replacement the next morning. so as far as customer support goes thumbs up for samsung.
