Just out of interest, what was the last generation AGP cards from ATi/nvidia.
Want to buy one, and would like to know what I should be looking for I guess.

    thanks !

    Re: Agp gfx

The most recent AGP graphics card you can buy is the ATI Radeon HD4650 / HD4670. NVidia haven't done an AGP card since the 7-series, so if you want something DX10 it has to be ATI.

There don't seem to be many in stock at the minute: here's a Sapphire 4650 at ebuyer

    Re: Agp gfx

In benchmarks there's very little to separate a HD4650 and a HD3850 - if anything the 3850 is slightly faster. but tbh if you're going for an AGP card the subsystem is likely to be the limiting factor: what's the rest of the computer like?

    Re: Agp gfx

Its just for my lad tbh.

    Athlon64 3200
    DDR400 on ECS board.

think ill look for a 3850 used then.

Found a 4650 512 for £40ish, but would rather spend less for its now limited life.

    Re: Agp gfx

If you can find one an AGP 2600 / 3650 would probably do the job with that subsystem, but new they're likely to be around £40 anyway.

Second hand you could always keep an eye out for AGP cards in the Radeon X1xxx series (look for the X1600 or higher), or GeForce 7 series (look for 7600GT or higher).

    Re: Agp gfx

You should probably consider upgrading to a pcie express motherboard/cpu, cos i recall that all motherboards with agp only support cpus that will bottleneck anything from hd 3650 upwards (pentium d cpus, athlon...); so probably a much bigger performance gain can be achieved for not much more cost by going core2duo/i3 with a midrange pci e graphics card.

thanks but tbh its not that much of an issue that would be worth changing for, but may be worth changing to a PCie board only for the fact AGP cards are not too comon now.

Not really true. A reasonably-clocked Athlon 64 won't bottleneck many games on a 3850, and even if it does that just means you can get all the extra graphical pretties (high-res textures / AA / AF) for "free".

Building an entire new PCIe system would cost massively more than the £40 a reasonable AGP graphics card will cost. If the subsystem is still running smoothly then there's no reason to scrap it for the sake a few extra FPS in a small number of gaming titles.

    Re: Agp gfx

I'm still running a P4 Prescott 3.4ghz @ 4.01 with 4gb Corsair XMS Pro LL @ 2.5-2-2-6 and an ATI 3850, put in the 3850 after a watercoolking mishap involving my XFX 6800 Ultra. Certainly worth it on the money front to grab a more powerful AGP card as opposed to converting to PCIE if you're looking to play more dated titles.

thanks guys, decided to buy a new bundle with a PCIE slot, purely for the hassle free option of getting a card or CPU should be want to play an FPS in the future.
