Would the decrease in memory size only affect high resolution gamers?
I think it is going to be dependent on whether the card and game is able to make use of all that ram. Textures use alot of memory too iirc. There was alot of comparison between 512mb and 1gb cards on their arrival. This will be the first chnage to see if a new gen card will show any difference between 1 and 2gb!
Interestingly the 460 speeds got bumped a little on arrival of the 6850. Now the 6870 will get bumped in preperation of the 560. 470 performance perhaps?
The HD6870 is already around the same speed as a GTX470:

Meant 560 = 470
So what is current opinion on card memory nowadays? I recall sligh differences until hi resolution between 512/1GB when that debate first came about but never even considered 1GB wasn't enough for some games?!
I have a 1680X1050 so 1GB should be fine for a while IMHO.

It seems a few more factory overclocked HD6870 1GB cards are being released:

Whats the sudden rage around these? Surely O/C'd 68xx were available last year anyway?

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
The new HD6870 1GB cards use non-reference coolers and the overclocks seem to be larger too.
However, these still need to be not more than £170 as both the HD6950 1GB and GTX560 1GB are around the £200 level.
An HD6870 1GB at around 950MHZ to 975MHZ is probably around the same speed as an HD5870 1GB or a GTX560TI 1GB at stock clockspeeds.

at the risk of sounding stupid tweaked 460s run just a tiny bit slower than 560 stock so why invest extra 35-45 quid ?

i was mainly referring to cats previous post terbinator "An HD6870 1GB at around 950MHZ to 975MHZ is probably around the same speed as an HD5870 1GB or a GTX560TI 1GB at stock clockspeeds." and the fact he said those cards are gonna be around 170 quid
