Excuse the possible naivety in this question but...

...are some PC games developed to play better on either an ATI or an Nvidia video card?

I appreciate it might be a nieve question guys but it's just something I thought about whilst contemplating which video card upgrade to go for on my new system.

I've not been able to play any of the latest games hence the need for an upgrade but recall seeing 'advert's during some games start-up video intros that make statements like "Better on Nvidia" and the same with some games on ATI.

Are these just adverts for the manufacturers video cards of which the software company are paid to advertise or do some games actually play better due to how they are manufactured?

I'm not talking about the PhysX stuff or SLI/Crossfire etc.

I'm only asking as I was about to start up all the games I have installed that I consider to be my favourites to see if these adverts were in place in the hope to compile a list to see which come out on top in the hope it would make me decide between an ATI or an Nvidia card but if it's only an in-game paid for advert then I guess it makes no difference!!

Not on purpose I don't think. But Batman: Arkham Asylum is an example of this.

Typically it's a result of the Nvida or ATI paying the developer a sum / offering time and effort working on their game. Very rarely are there any major advantages gained over the other so I really wouldn't base your decision on which card to get by this.

Re: Excuse the possible naivety in this question but...

Hate to completely disagree with the other two, but...

Yes, there are some games which quite simply run more smoothly on cards from one company or the other. It's down to the "developer relations" branches of the graphics business, and nvidia have typically done it a lot better than ATI in the past.

    HOWEVER

    1) it doesn't always work out as intended. Sometimes no matter how well optimised for one architecture a game is, it ends up playing more smoothly on the other company's hardware. I believe Dirt 2 is a classic example of this: it was sponsored by ATI's dev rel team and was a DX11 release title for the Radeon 5800s, but when the GTX480 / GTX470 came out it ended up running better on nvidia hardware (go figure).

    2) Often even if a game does run smoother on one company's cards it's not sufficient to make a difference. For instance, if you're talking about a game like CoD: MW2, it clearlt favours nvidia graphics cards, but pretty much all mid range cards can average > 60fps on it, and you're very unlikely to notice the difference with the naked eye between a Radeon 6850 (< £150) and a GTX580 (> £400!).

    3) You can't beat reviews: so decide which games you want to play most often, then look for graphics reviews that use those games. If you can't find anyone, slap a question in here and I'm sure a useful hexite will be able to point you in the right direction

I'm not really sure you are disagreeing with me!
