My XFX HD4870 fan has started making a hell of a noise, sounds like the bearing is shot. Any pointers for a quiet replacement cooler?Going to take it out tonight for a better look, but think I will need a new cooler.
cheers

I used the Scythe Musashi with mine, though it's pretty massive so might not be an option if space is at a premium.
If you want something cheap since the card is getting old you could get the Akasa vortexx neo and use a zalman fanmate with it.
Give it a little oiling. Which model is it btw; a reference PCB?
Sorry for not getting back, started a new job this week and its been hectic.
Its an xfx hd 4870 1gb, I assume its reference.
I've got an Accelero S1 here which is fine..
If you get real stuck I've got my stock hsf which I took off it when I put the Accelero on..
that Accelero S1 looks good, do you run it totally fanless?
got one of these on mine and keeps it in check

I run it with one of the turbo modules, I used to run my stock cooler at 20% all the time and then underclock it from its stock 780/1000 to 500/500 to keep it quiet as well as cool, it used to hit ~70oC playing CS:S and BF:BC2.
However since sticking the Accelero on its hitting the same temps but with it back at 780/1000 clocks, and its quieter than the stock fan was at 20%..
I saw an akasa vortex cooler that may be worth checking out. It is pretty cheap and is compatible with most cards.
take the fan palstic casing off and attach a 12cm fan on it with zip tie.!
