Upgrade from an 8800GTX to a ?... (budget around £160)

I'm quite out of step GPU wise so I need some advice.

Currently running an Nvidia 8800GTX but it's time to upgrade, with a budget of around £160 (plus or minues a couple of quid).

I think ATI have the lead at the moment but I've no preference. Would prefer a card with a very good cooler on it, low noise and low temps, and would love an HIS HD 6870 IceQ X Turbo but nowhere has them and I'd presume it would be around £200 ?.

This Asus HD6870 1GB was under £160 on Scan Today Only a few weeks ago:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-a...2x-displayport

This XFX HD6870 1GB is also worth considering:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-a...2x-displayport

Both are meant to have decent coolers:

    http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...roduction.html

    http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...onclusion.html

The GTX560TI and HD6950 2GB are faster cards but you are looking at least £180 to £190.

    Edit!!

There is this HD5870 1GB for under £160 without delivery:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-147-XF

The HD5870 1GB is a faster card than an HD6870 1GB. The HD6870 1GB has better tessellation performance but the HD5870 1GB has more shaders.

BTW,what is the PSU and CPU the OP currently has??

An HD6870 1GB over £170 is not worth the price as a GTX560TI or and HD6950 2GB can be had for a few quid more.

This is my little brothers PC and the last time I worked on it the PSU was a 750w Corsair.

I'm replacing the CPU and mobo at the same time, so maybe a i5 2400 with an Intel P67 mobo.

I would go for the 6950 and unlock to a 6970.
Scan have GTX460's SSC for £150. That should beat a 6870 at stock

    Scan have them in stock.

im running a GTX 470 and it is a fantastic card. They're going from between £160 - £250, i actually consider it to be quite an under rated card. It impresses me constantly, (coming from consoles to PC gaming) i cant believe i waited so long to start PC gaming instead. Shame sony dont bring their exclusives out for PC.

I had the same quandary at Christmas time, and I eventually went with the Gigabyte 460SuperOC. It seems pretty speedy to me and it is definitely commendably quiet. Scan have it for £167 (according to http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-g...0mhz-336-cores) which is a little less than I paid for mine - probably due to the launch of the 560.

If you want a new (5 series) card from the green team, then I guess your budget means looking at a top spec 550.

(And I'm overweight and over 40! Diet pending...)

i would choose either the superclocked gtx480 from gigbyte or asus 6950 2gb and unlock it to a 6970. both cost just over £200 and will last you at least 48 months.

Re: Upgrade from an 8800GTX to a ?... (budget around £160)

Overclockers are currently selling (13/5/11) MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti Twin FrozR II at £165 until they run out of stock. It's less power hungry then a 460 and you'll liely save the difference in price over the lifetime of the card on your electricity bill.

Bit annoyed as I spent £195 on a 2GB HD6950 from Ebuyer earlier today .
