    Question Gaming monitor recommendations?

    Currently I've got an (old) Viewsonic VX924 19" monitor, but now I'd like to be able to move to something that's 16:9 rather than 4:3. Currently my VX924 is DVI'd to a PC and connected over VGA to a newish XBox360 (the VGA cable has a audio takeoff which I feed into my PC speakers).

    I'm not looking for something too large - I figure 23" is the maximum that she-who-must-be-obeyed will permit, and something larger than 19" but smaller than 23" is probably my "sweet spot". Because it needs to be a replacement for the VX924 then it needs to have both DVI and VGA connections (unless someone can give me a cunning way to get the XBox to use HDMI for video and some other way to send the sound to a 3.5mm jack?)

    Any recommendations? I'm not that picky about brands (although if Dell or HP figures in the recommendations then I can get a discount) and a price limit of about £200. Since most of my gaming is XBox360-based then I'm guessing I don't need to look for the 120MHz 3D-capable monitors, although true HD resolution (1920x1080) would be a nice-to-have.

    Re: Gaming monitor recommendations?

    I'm currently using a Samsung P2270HD, 1920x1080 for my PC and PS3.

    The PC plugs into the DVI port and a 3.5mm audio-in jack, the PS3 plugs into the HDMI port, and then there's a 3.5mm headphone port which I plug into my speakers.

    Or alternatively, I could put a 2-1 3.5mm adapter on the back of the speakers, then plug a male-male 3.5mm cable into the PC and the adapter, and the TV headphone port and the adapter.

    I've just googled the P2270HD and it doesn't look the same as mine, so perhaps it's had a refresh. Either way, if you get a 1080p TV then there's a good chance of it having HDMI/D-SUB inputs and a headphone socket, then it's just a question of which approach you want to take on whether you need a 3.5mm audio-in socket or not.

    Re: Gaming monitor recommendations?

    Thanks for the recommendations both of you - the Dell offer looks pretty sweet, and it hadn't occurred to me that I could replace my monitor with a small tv. Certainly a tv would be easier to get hold of.

    Again, thanks for taking the time to reply.

    Fantastic monitor (I have it) but it has no HDMI input, so it might be a bit of an inconvenience for you (you can get a HDMI to DVI or HDMI to Display Port).

    Re: Gaming monitor recommendations?

    You can get the U2311H for slightly less directly from Dell:

    The code still works and you can cashback on top of this!

    Re: Gaming monitor recommendations?

    What about this? BenQ EW2420

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/240230

    It uses a VA panel which produces 3000:1 contrast ratio. Deep blacks, great color depth, wide viewing angles, and definitely competes with low end IPS monitors like the 2311H. Unlike the 2311H, it also provides USB port connections, onboard speakers, headphone jack, HDMI x2, DVI, VGA. Costs about £170. It's LED backlit, Full HD 1920x1080. It is 24 inch display as well though. Not sure if you can cross the 23" thread haha. It's a bargain and worth considering though
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.

    Re: Gaming monitor recommendations?

    Got my new monitor at the weekend - a LG W2361VP (23") from Argos. With Nectar point trade-in it only cost me £60. (And I got £10 back in vouchers)

    Not a bad monitor - got HDMI, VGA and DVI ports, along with a headphone port (at the back - wth!). Colours are quite bright and it seems to cope fine with fast moving graphics - tried it with Homefront and NeedForSpeed:HotPursuit and they were both fine. It also looks quite appealing - smooth curves everywhere.

    Downsides are:
    1. Manual only available on CD, and it's pretty sketchy;
    2. No VESA mounting holes;
    3. Vertical angles very poor - with noticable degradation after about 45 degrees. Horizontal angles are fine;
    4. Headphone output quite quiet (and no volume control);
    5. No autoswitching between ports (all the monitors I've had to this point have autoswitched, so this was a major shock)

    So all in all I'm "content" with my purchase, but I probably wouldn't recommend it to others unless they feel that they could live with the shortcomings above.
    Again, thanks for all the help

    I am after a new monitor mainly for gaming. I was trying to gauge how to find a decent monitor when I came across http://www.digitalversus.com/monitors-article-923.html

    The monitors recommended on there are approaching 3 years old, is there somewhere that you can find up to date information about the latest monitors

    Re: Gaming monitor recommendations?

    I'm looking at getting this.

    Mainly for the height adjust and the 2ms refresh. With some of the newer graphics you can do triple screen gaming running a game across 3 DVI screens:

    http://www.techspot.com/review/390-t...g-performance/

    So im gonna keep my two old 19" samsungs and run them either side of this 24" iiyama for a resolution of 7680x1600

    Cant get better than than for a "gaming monitor recommendation"
