    3850 went bang... advice..

    Okay,

3850 in my system, while on, a blanking plate came loose and just touched the back of the card, saw one red light, got a full system restart, no picture, no matter what i've tried, (removing, putting back in, checking for damage etc) can't get it to work.

So first advice, is this a goner?

Second, if so, what should I replace with, got about £50 to spend, i.e. buying second hand, what is still a good card that will future proof me for a while.

Sounds like its a gonna' have you got any old pci card you could plug in to check nothing else has been take out??

It mainly depends what you use your PC for. At a guess a bit of light gaming so something like a 4770/4850/4870 or 5750/5770 (at a push price wise) would do you depending upon how good your PSU is as a 4870 requires 2 pci-e 6 pin power plugs.

Nvidia wise you could pick up an 8800/9800 model or even a 260gtx (again power requirements aside)

No card for around £50 ATM is going to be ultra fast in the more demanding modern games.

The best for around that price is an HD5670 512MB GDDR5:

I have one of these myself and will run Borderlands at high settings at 1440X900 and L4D at high settings at 1680X1050.

    The HD5670 GDDR5 is around 25% faster than an HD4670 DDR3 or GDDR3:

The HD4670 is around the same speed as an HD3850 512MB.

260 or if you can find one at that price a 5770. No future proofing though the5770 will be alot cooler but slower and seems to use 1/2 the power in 3D mark. As said above it may depend on your psu. The big difference is dx11 but no card at this price point/power wise is going to be using it anyhow.

Plenty on ebay so forum markets should get you one.
