    Best Upgrade?

So I finally got that Celery E1400 out of my System and went to E4500, not great but its a very noticeable improvement and its pretty much the best my bored can handle

Now time to upgrade the 4870 as I've been out of the graphics card game for a while I have no clue on what to get!

I want something that will give me a very noticeable improvement like going from a 9500GT to a 4850 did.

price max of <200 if its worth it il go over by a tenner or so but no more.

    Thanks

    Re: Best Upgrade?

I take it you'll be overclocking the E4500? The good news is that technologically it's almost identical to an E6400 (it has a slower FSB but higher multi). Push the FSB up to 533MHz sorry, 1066MHz and you should have a decent performer on your hands

What resolution is your monitor? That's going to decide how much difference a new card will make.

    Re: Best Upgrade?

I can't my rubbish mobo only supports 800FSB and a 65nm chip that's why I'm limited to an E4 series.

At the minute it's 1440x900 but I'm getting a proper moniter in a few months so either 1650 or 1080.

    Re: Best Upgrade?

Also for unknown reasons on the BIOS the standard FSB setting is at 200 and I can only put it up to 250, even 251 would cause my computer to not boot, take the BIOS bat out and it will tell me the overclock failed (it did the same on the E1400) so I can only set it at a max of 2.7Ghz

I though you were going to do a bigger upgrade??

The HD4870 should still do the job in many games IMHO. I would probably consider an HD6870 1GB due to its lower power consumption:

If you are upgrading the computer gradually I would also get the following PSU:

Same owner as Powercolor, looks like a budget version (cheaper cooler, maybe PCB). But I'd hit it

No I dont need a New PSU, I have 2 PSU's one for the system and 1 for the GFX card.

and that was the plan but that plan was crushed when I moved out and started paying rent

    Re: Best Upgrade?

What is your other PSU BTW??

Also,be careful as there is a GTX560 and a GTX560TI. At stock speeds the HD6950 1GB is faster although a pre-overclocked GTX560TI running at around 900MHZ should be around the same speed.

The GTX560TI and HD6950 tend to around the same price.

There is also the HD5870 1GB:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-x...i-2-x-dl-dvi-i

The HD6870 1GB does have better tessalation performance but the HD5870 1GB seems to be faster in almost every game.

    Re: Best Upgrade?

My main PSU is a 400W silverpower that you recommended CAT :-)
and I have a X3 booster for the graphics card kindly supplied with the 4870 by someone on Hexus :-)
Basically I want to see a difference BFBC 2 isn't playing so well so I want something that's going to give me a proper jump for around 200.

    Re: Best Upgrade?

It may very well be your CPU thats crapping BC2 performance.

Edit: For reference, an i7 920 with only two cores (no Hyper-theading) enabled runs at about 75% CPU utilisation under BFBC2.

Oh flaming ellllll! Surely going from a e1400 to a proper dual core e4500 would have sorted that out?

    Re: Best Upgrade?

Is it pointless getting a new graphics card then? The best CPU I can get is a E4700. I do plan as CAT said a big upgrade (replace everything) but that won't be for a while. Bfbc2 is the only game so far that runs dishy.
