    New card, choices a many

    Hello all

I am looking for a new gfx card to replace my failing 280gtx. I think I have narrowed it down to two.

    Asus GTX 560 (£140, dabbs)
Asus GTX 560TI TOP (£180, dabbs)

    (Cant post url's, sorry)

The TOP model has come way down from its £220 mark to the current £180, that plus the many shining reviews makes me think that it is a good choice over the other. However I keep looking at the other one as it is £40 cheaper, alot of money. Is the TOP £40 better??? I cant decide.

Can anyone offer some advice, even if only to suggest some alternatives?

    My specs:
    Intel i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz (stock, not OC)
    Gigabyte EX58-UD5
    Corsair DDR3 (6 gig of)
    Corsair 750w PSU
    Running Windows 7 (64)

Price range is £100 - £180 ish. I would like to spend less if I can but I also like to keep cards for at least a good 2 or 3 years, so no short cuts

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Regards,
    Andy (vreetech)

i have the 460 top and i think it's the same difference. It runs cooler (not quiter) and mine (as well as reviewed models) allows for heavy core overclocking and you get access to voltage control.

Possibly worth it if you are very in to overclocking but you'd probably be better off buying games with the saved £40 to use it with (at the time it was the cheapest 460 i could find so was a win win)

the factory overclocks are a bit feeble IIRC.

What resolution do you game at? Also, which games do you play regularly or intend to play in the near future?

Im not really into OC but i think that in about a year or two i will oc my system, get some more life out of it. My main problem is that i cant decide if the extra £40 is worth it (or should i say if the Ti TOP is £40 better than the none Ti).

At around the £180 mark, either the 560ti or 6950 1GB would be a good choice. You can see the comparisons here anandtech.

At around the £140 mark if wanted to save some money, then a 460 or 6850 would both be good choices, keep looking around for special offers to see if something is massively discounted. There was a 5850 recently on offer for £100 which is a bargain.

Thanks very much. There isnt a great deal between the cards (560ti and 6950) but i think the 6950 scored a little higher. I have had nvidia's in the past so will stick with them for the time being.

Hexus gave the Asus 560Ti TOP a really good review. There are others that have been reviewed but the fact that the card was £220 and has come down by £40 i like

Any other helpfull infomation you can give? May sound silly but how "future proof" are the cards these days? My 280gtx was still going strong after 2 and a half years before it busted

Re: New card, choices a many

With the vast majority of games being developed on multiple platforms currently I think cards are reasonably future proof. Most cards costing more than £100 can play all current games easily, you can just scale down a few graphical options as the years go by.

At a total guess, a 6950 or 560 will be good for another 3-5 years before showing its age.

Small tip: look into a slight overclock (stock volts) on your 920. Will have some fun learning about how your computer works and should provide a nice boost in CPU heavy games.

Sounds good. I think the Ti maybe it then. I have never OC anything before but I have looked into it. It dont really want to OC it until I have to. As it is things are fine for the time being, but I may still give it a go hehe.
