    Unhappy 6870 woes

Installing a new card on my brother's system.
    Specs

    Mainboard : Packard Bell MCP73PVT-PM
    Chipset : nVidia GeForce 7100
    Processor : Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2500 MHz
    Physical Memory : 4096 MB (2 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM )
Hard Disk : WDC (640 GB)
Hard Disk : WD (500 GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : TSSTcorp CDDVDW SE-S084F USB Device
Network Card : RTL8101 PCIe Fast Ethernet Adapter
Operating System : Windows 7 Home Premium Home Edition 6.01.7600 (x64)
    DirectX : Version 10.00
Silverstone 500w modular PSU with 2x pcie (model sst-st50f-230)

    Right, here's how it goes.
He's upgraded from an Nvidia 9800gt (green edition- no psu plug in)
He's moving to an XFX HD6870 black

Weve run driver sweeper in safe mode to remove all the old drivers. (repeatedly)
Powered down and swapped cards (repeatedly)
Scanned for new hardware in device manager (more than repeatedly)
and the 6870 is not being seen by the PC.

We swapped to the old 9800gt and it fired up with PNP (no drivers installed).
When we sawpped back to the 6870, there was still no output.
The fans on the 6870 spool up to 100% and both of the power lines are installed nice n firm. THe card itself has been seated and reseated.
And still there is not even a suggestion of output from the card.

Weve checked a PSU calculator online and we dont even need 400w for this system, nevermind 500.

At a bit of a loss here, Im now sat in a pool of my own hair as this should not be THIS hard.

    SUGGESTIONS!

Does the card work in your (or any other known working) computer?

    Re: 6870 woes

I had the same problem with an Asus P5N-E Sli motherboard which also had a nforce chipset, it would only post (and boot) about one in every 30 power ons.

I didnt find a solution apart from changing the motherboard, now I have one with an intel chipset and it boots every time.

My original thread on the problem is here

Just had the 6870 running in my rig.
Might try my 6850 in my bro's rig and see if its just the fact that the 6870 is a higher power muncher

    Re: 6870 woes

OK so not the card - could be an incompatibility with the version of PCI-E the card is on - there shouldn't be, but some chipsets are a little odd, like the nforce one mentioned by chris_argyle above. Yours is a nforce 630 chipset for example. You might be able to find some chipset drivers to help out, or it could be fundamentally incompatible.

    Re: 6870 woes

Also you have to bear in mind this is a 'knackered dell' pc board so it wont neccesarily confirm to all the standards as a lot of there boards are custom made OEM stuff. You might need a new motherboard and case to get it working.
