    6950 Crossfire

Can anyone give me a decent reason to not go out tomorrow and buy two 6950s for the PC on the left?

I have always wanted a reasonably top of the line PC (Budget AMD builder for years) and i think two of these will put me up there. I largely use my PC for Gaming, Live Stream Broadcasting and Fraps recording(and encoding) and do not like any stuttering in my games what-so-ever.

Are the 7*** series close to release? I have not seen anything about them but I have also not been one to follow the latest graphics fads (being a budget builder) so do not know if they are likely to be released on Monday.

    Regards,

Are there any games you play that your 5870 cannot max with a 22" monitor currently? My 6950 maxes absolutely everything @ 1920x1200 bar tessellation in Metro 2033.

7 series is due Q4 this year.

I don't really have any trouble when playing the games on their own, it is only when I introduce fraps/Xsplit that my frame rates start dropping. Also if I purchase these I can give my 5870 to my little brother who is going to be using my old system (AMD 955 etc...)

    Re: 6950 Crossfire

Fraps is pretty finicky, not done it for a while but I remember sequential rates being an important factor for the HDs (F3's are good though!), as was locking framerates at the time.

I'd get one card to start with anyway, if you lack in power for whatever reason then can add another. Xfire would most likely be overkill.

I am wondering why you even bothered upgrading from a 955+5870 when you have a 22" screen?

    Your system was already overkill....

Perhaps you should investigated why FRAPs is causing the issue....

Because fraps is a demanding program even when writing to a separate hard drive, even with my 955 overclocked at 3.6 its performance was poor. Since upgrading I have seen massive improvements across the board especially in clock heavy games such as X3:TC and any source engine games. It has also cut my rendering times from 40+ minutes to 10 which is a massive improvement in of itself. I also learned after making this thread that I am getting a 32" Samsung monitor that is no longer needed off of one of my friends.

Either way I am considering going with one 6950/6970 and then buying another if I feel disappointed in a game I wish to play.

    Re: 6950 Crossfire

See if you can find a 6950 2gb that can be flashed to 6970 although I think they are a bit scarce now. I upgraded from a 5850 to a 6950 flashed to 6970 and it play all my games at 1080P even if i run fraps.

go for it if you want to play with 2 cards. but tbh im running 2 5870's and thats overkill for any games out atm.

    Re: 6950 Crossfire

i think that 6950 is at good price right now. I'm buying 1 tommorow for my new rig.. Only get the 2gig version if you're planning to run multiple displays.
