    Graphics card is squealing?

I recently bought a new PSU and Graphics card, a corsair HX 950 and asus gtx 580 direct cuii respectively and have noticed a high pitch noise coming from my build during most applications.

I'm pretty sure it's coming from the graphics card as while on a web page if i scroll the noise will become slightly louder. It happens during most operations but increases especially while gaming.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what i could do to fix this

    Thank you

    Re: Graphics card is squealing?

Could be a bit of muck of some sort on the bearings on its fan maybe

Open the machine up and start running a game then take a look and listen at the fans. You can either RMA the card or use a little bit of WD40 on the fan to see if it sorts it out.

Bear in mind though, if you use a bit of WD on the fan it could possibly void your warranty so do so at own risk.

    Re: Graphics card is squealing?

Some graphics cards do just squeal when they're being used. I had an 8800GT and it was absolutely terrible for it while folding.

My 560 still does it now as well, although it's nowhere near as noticeable.

Someone told me it was the resistors or something like that in the card.

EDIT: the fact that it gets louder when you scroll through a webpage suggests it isn't the fan, otherwise it would be a constant noise, I might be wrong though.

Sounds like coil whine to me, normally capping your FPS via v sync shuts the thing up, will normally be noticeable when the card is producing hundreds of FPS, eg menus etc.

    Re: Graphics card is squealing?

Thanks for the replies, I'm pretty sure it's not fan related due to how the nature of the sound changes on the different tasks, i do keep vsynch on a lot of the time and still notice it. What is RMA'ing like with Asus? I dont real feel like being without a graphics card for a while :S

    Re: Graphics card is squealing?

I stickied the excellent thread about VGA warranties :

    http://forums.hexus.net/graphics-car...ally-look.html

Looking at that the ASUS warranty service can be quite poor. If you have had the card less than a year go back to the supplier with it.

WD40 is the last thing I would put on a fan, if you need a Water Displacer for your graphics card then minor squealing is the least of your worries

Using a lubricant is dodgy too, usually the fan bearings are hard to get to and just clog up with dust if you oil them.

Anyway, this sounds like an inductor. If the windings aren't tight enough, they work like a loudspeaker coil. Quite safe and not going to fail any time soon, but if it is too loud for your application you could try and return it as not fit for purpose. I hope they take it back without fuss, frankly I would have hoped Asus would have avoided the cheap inductors that usually have this problem.
