Question TFTs - How common are dead pixels?

I'm moving into a new flat, with a smaller room, hence the need to get a TFT, but after reading loads on them I'm a bit worried about the whole dead pixel thing. I know that I'm the kind of person who'd get really really irritated staring at one all day!

So - how common are they? Relatively rare, or more 1 in 3 type thing?

Also, are there any decent online shops that'll check a TFT for you before sending it out? Even if I had to pay an extra £10-20 that'd be great for the peace of mind.

I'd prefer to buy from a local store, so I could check the monitor personally, but the ones near me just stock cheap no-name stuff- and reading these forums (and others) I'm looking towards a Hitachi CML174SXWB or a LG L1710B (I do a lot of gaming).

    Cheers!

www.nexnix.co.uk (iirc) do the hitachi screens (Very good TFTs) and for £10 they will open it and test it for dead pixels etc.

Cheers all - CocoPops - that's just what I'm looking for! Thanks.

and a tenner sounds very reasonable compared to the frustration i'd feel if i got one with a dead pixel....

I've had four Iiyama TFT's, all 1024x768 and only one of them had a dead pixel. Even then, that one was only lacking the blue part, so tended to look red at times.

ISO spec allows 2 permanently black, 2 permanently white and 5 subpixel errors, per 1 million

a permanently blue pixel is 3 subpixel errors, a pixel which can display shades of blue is 2 subpixel errors, a pixel which misses only one primary color is one subpixel error.

a 15" tft has 786432 pixels, 17" or more tfts are 1310720 pixels
