    Gtx 460 sli?

Right well ive built my new system and ive carried my 460 over, i said id wait for bf3 to come out before deciding on a new gpu however i have come to the conclusion that a fair few of my games could do with an extra bit of fps, ive been siding with the idea of getting a second 460 as i dont want to spend much as i want to be in a position to upgrade when the AMD 7900 are out and possibly when Nvidias 6 series are.

A 460 at cex is £100 with a year warranty (plenty of time to wait then ) and i have a few things ive yet to sell and can easily get that down to £50 cash. Now the main part is, what are the disadvantages of an sli setup? all i can think of its reliability that game to game is not going to be 100% the same, are there any other issues?

    Re: Gtx 460 sli?

Speaking as someone with SLI 460s, the only downside I can think of is that one of the cards runs hotter than the other, so fan speed and noise is correspondingly higher, but it is by no means intrusive, especially if you have the sound on.

Other than that, I would say Arma II and BFBC2 Vietnam are slightly more prone to crashes than when I had my single 5770, but that could just as easily be my Windows install getting clogged up over time.

Regarding scaling, I usually see in excess of 90% - drivers have come on noticeably in the last two years. (Usually get 30-50fps on Arma II with everything maxed apart from the view distance, and 60-80fps on BFBC2 Vietnam).

If you fold as well, it's a nice way to double the PPD.

    Re: Gtx 460 sli?

Yeah I've benched my 460's as single cards and as SLi and the improvement is min 50% on stuff I do, up to 90% or so (apart from 3dmark I have just been using fraps so not very scientific)

As Skull trail says the temps go up a bit, but so long as your case isn't crammed nothing to worry about. I've not noticed any stability issues with SLi and I've been running SLI systems for 6? years now?

If you can get a second card for £100 then you are laughing, by far the best value increase for the money you will get.

Get two centre based 460's and the temps may rise but not enough to be an issue IMO.

the 2nd card only gets hot if its shoved up next to the 1st, depends if your 2nd sli slots 3 or 5 slots form the 1st ,5 slots and your totally fine m8. (unless they are single slot ?)

    Re: Gtx 460 sli?

i should be fine in regards to temps, my current 460 is under water single slot and my new motherboard seems to be atleast 2 slots apart (most likely 3) so should be alright. Seems CEX arent selling online anymore, will be emailing to see if they can but if not ill just have to keep an eye out on ebay lol.

    Thanks for the responses guys!

    Re: Gtx 460 sli?

Ooo what system do you have now?

Get them both under-water, full volts and 900MHz on the core - you'll be tearing through every game.

    Re: Gtx 460 sli?

check mysystem now, forgot to update lol!.

    I5 2500k
    Asus p8z68 -v
    8gb ddr3 ram 1600mhz

so now i wont be cpu limited for awhile , i just want my gpu setup to last me... i want a 7000 series or 600 series (the 7900 seems to be set to be great with new ram but we shall see!) but im happy to sit on 2x 460s till i really need to upgrade again, half my budget is pretty much available to spend when i need it so anytime is good for my proper upgrade... stop gap is a good one .

Any brands i should look for specifically?

EVGA, naturally. You should be fine by a card by any of the big three motherboard vendors though.
