I have a MSI GeForce4 MX440. Not the best graphics card. But thefan on it broke recently and I was wondering do I really need one? I bought a cheap one, bout a couple of pounds, and its noisy as hell. It's the noisiest fan on my computer and I haven't even built it as a slient pc!
Anyway, I was wondering do I really need it?
That depends on how much heat the graphics card produces. But considering it had one to begin with, it would probably need one. There are other alternatives for graphics card coolers.Quote:

If you just take the fan off that graphics card it will probably overheat. If, however, you replace the whole HSF with a larger passive heatsink, you'll probably be better off. However, some airflow around the card would help the heatsink, especially if it doesn't have its own fan.

it probly wld be cheaper just to get a new graphics card - but you really really dont want to make another mistake like you have with the MX - that means no radeon 9000/9200s or FX5200s as they are really no better than the card you have
i would say that the min you shld buy atm is a 9800pro...but if you cant afford that then a [relativly] low end card like a 9600SE would probly do you - if you have a GF4mx you probly dont play the games that need a 9800pro anyway ;)
you can get a 9600SE from OCUK for about 60 quid, or fleabay has em cheaper
i've got a mx440 and it's not got a fan onit so i guess they don't need one, i've even overclocked mine quite a bit and it still doesn't get too hot
The MX420 and MX440 can be run passively in a case with decent air flow. A few companys sell them passive out of the box :)
Im not sure if they are clocked lower though - i dont think they are.
Will there be much differences between the performances of the cards if they are by different brands. Like ATI, Asus, Gigabyte, Hercules etc.?
They sometimes stick different memory on that can clock faster/slower, and alter the core speed sometimes...
Is the Gigabyte GV-R98P128D (Radeon 9800PRO / 128MB / DDR RAM ) a good card?
Yes. At the moment, 9800 Pros probably represents the best value for money, although thanks to the X800s and 6800s, its no longer at the cutting edge of technology. Where are you getting it from? Scan does it pretty cheap: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...roductID=60853Quote:
