    2 x HD 5770 + i3 2100

    Hi guys,

I am contemplating buying a second HD 5770 from the classifieds on here to run in Crossfire with my current card. I am wondering though if it will actually be worth doing, as I am running an i3 2100 on a Z68XP-UD3 which will run both cards at x8.

The question is will the i3 2100 cause a bottle neck that will prevent me seeing any improvements in performance?

    Thanks for the help.

Completely depends on the game and the resolution. Examples?

    Re: 2 x HD 5770 + i3 2100

Just getting back into the PC gaming front TBH. The most demanding game I'm running just now is Flight Sim X as well as Rise of Flight. My boys are showing interest too, so might well be buying some more recent titles for them, mainly first person shooters.

My monitor maxes out at 1980x1080 so won't be going higher than that for a while.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Re: 2 x HD 5770 + i3 2100

i3 2100 should be fine for 2x 5770, and the x8/x8 won't affect performance noticably either. At 1080p you should see a reasonable improvement too - one 5770 is a little underpowered for 1080p in modern games, but two should be just about right.

Performance will vary between games though, of course; anything that's CPU heavy might suffer a little - and there's always the vagueries of multi-gpu setups that means just occasionally you'll hit a game that really doesn't like it. But I can't see any reason to think that adding a second 5770 (or, frankly, a 6770, which is identical in all meaningful ways, easier to find, and cheaper!) wouldn't be a good upgrade for you.

    Re: 2 x HD 5770 + i3 2100

First person shooters will work great with that potential set up - they tend to be very heavily weighted towards GPU. You will always have a bottleneck somewhere, but 2x5770 is not so amazingly powerful that that will shift straight to the CPU - the i3 2100 is a great gaming chip. The question is whether it would be cheaper/more convenient to sell your existing 5770 and buy a single card like a 6870.
