I already have a nice 19" CRT and its fine, the reason for the TFT isnt so much as a replacement for the CRT (Unless its better) but for it to goto LANs and stuff with the Shuttle, atm its nice small shuttle n heffin great 19" which kinda defeats the object a bit
The TFT will mainly sit by the TV in the front room out of the way when the Shuttles not in use and then just moved from next to the TV so I can see it to setup the Shuttle to play films on the TV...

    16ms response time
    1600x1200 res

*slobbers and await sizeable lottery win*

    Anyway back on track

The lg ones have got good user reviews but im always suspicious of ebuyer user review- its hard to be objective when you have just blown £300 on a tft.

vast majority of tfts still suffer from ghosting in games I had one from work and gave up far cry with it as the ghosting was bad, this was on the new 12*10 res tft's as well. TFT is just too restrictive in terms of viewing angle, res etc CRT is still waaay better if you have the space. Id really like to get a TFT but they are just not there atm especially when you get the dead pixels syndrome. Nightmare on dark games where they stand out and look terrible. As a CRT 19inch Samsung comes in at £120 nowadays theres just no reason to go TFT yet.

first thing to note about this TFT, Trig, is its BIG!

The box it came in is HUGE.....my old 15" came in a little box....but not this one.
    Its MA-HOO-SIVE.

DVI cable IS included (phew) so is the USB hub cable, it has 2 ports (plus the upstream one)

Cant/won't plug it in at work.....but I thought I'd open it.....the box is big! I know thats not a reason to not buy it, BUT the box is hardly LAN material.

(special note for all people about to flame me for whining about the box: it has done a great job of getting imy valuable TFT here, in one piece, unmarked. I simply like packaging to be as compact as possible, cos I always use original packaging for transport. This is .....big)

crts can suffer from dead pixels, though it's less common than on a tft.

holes in a shadow-mask screen can be blocked, or not punched out properly.

and really, dead pixels are no more irritating than the two earth lines on a trinitron screen against a white background

if your jus gettin one for LANs then thats a good reason and a good idea imho =) no point in gettin a good one for them, i could put up with one for LANs..would have to be a 20" one tho cos i now find anything smaller than my cornerstone tiny ;/

and hex - it depends where the pixels are and how bad it is, if its in the middle of the screen then its well annoying [some of the ones @ uni have dead pixels in the center or near too it]. Ones near the edges are no more annoying than earth lines thats true =) but we're goin OT here, i only mentioned the crt Vs TfT thing earlier to give strength to my question of is it worth spendin the £££ =)

with trinitron you know youre getting those lines in the screen ..its a feature ..dead pixels arn't. TFT look good but for gamer they are not up to it but for everything else i think they work fine.

I've had my Samsung 181T for a while now. It's got 25ms response times but I find it fine for gaming. Never had any problems with it, though I must admit that I'm not a hardcore gamer.

Colour reproduction and viewing angle are both fine. What I gain from it is a pixel-perfect sharp image and no eye-strain. The eye-strain alone is worth the swap, IMO. I realise that opinions differ though.

I also think that CRT monitors look ugly. There's no point buying a sexy case, nice furniture, etc. and then matching it with a fulgy biege box of a CRT, IMO.

No reason to upgrade to TFT?? What a load of rubbish..
The lack of heat output, lack of eyestrain, and freeing up desk space for starters..

Not to mention that a crt's image degrades over time (My very highly rated Nokia is now going blurry around the edges), large crt's also weigh an absolute ton..

The only real down sides to tft's these days are the price (not so much) and the fact that most are fairly low resolution compared to crt (blame that on the laptop industry for swiping all the panels..), viewing angle, ghosting, and colour definition was dealt with aaaages ago.

If Zak says that TFT is fine for gaming then I for one believe him, in many cases there simply is no need to use crt's anymore.

Did I mention that I have a 19" Iiyama TFT that does 1600x1200 res as well...! Its not the greatest response timings on it (25ms), but its copes with everything that I've thrown at it....paid over £800 for this beauty, but Iiyama don't make them anymore.

Once you've used a TFT, you will never go back, the clarity of everything displayed esp text is worth the extra cost alone.
