    Could a 4870x2 run BF3?

    Hi,

Title says it all really, just wondering if a 4870x2 could run BF3 and if so what sort of settings (and resolution) would be realistic?

It's not actually for me, it's possibly for a friend so I don't what monitor or resolution he will be running.

It would probably be running on a Q6600 @ 3.2GHz in an ABit IP35 Pro with 4GB DDR2.

I know it's only a DX 10.1 card, but I think he'd be running it under Vista anyway. For framerate reasons I'm guessing the lack of DX11 may be no bad thing anyway?

    So what do you think?

    Thanks.

    Should run absolutely fine!

IIRC, the 4870X2 has 2GB of GDDR5 along with 2 very good GPUs, so it shouldn't struggle much, even with the settings up to high.

I know that the 4890 can get 40FPS with a mixture of medium and high @ 1920x1200.

    Re: Could a 4870x2 run BF3?

I cant run it @ 1920x1080 @ Medium with my rig. Runs some bits 60+fps and other bits < 15fps so it's a no from me... though I've got 2x 4870 in CrossfireX rather than a single card.

Maybe 1680x1050 @ Medium.. but I think the 512mb framebuffer is the issue for me...

Am thinking of upgrading to the HD 7xxx series if they're any good.

Are you sure the Crossfire X is doing its job? Maybe its rendering using a single 4870?

    Should run pretty poorly.

IIRC, the 4870X2 has 2GB of GDDR5 along with 2 very good GPUs,
The 4870x2 has 1gb of GDDR5 framebuffer accessible to each card, and good as the 4870 *was*, it's a very poor GPU for BF3.

so it shouldn't struggle much, even with the settings up to high.
It should be OK on medium.

Spoke to my mate today and his monitor (from what we could find on the net) has a max (and I guess native) resolution of 1280*1024.

    Re: Could a 4870x2 run BF3?

my 4870 before i got it replaced coz it was damn loud ran skyrim on 1920x1080 with max settings. I really can't see it struggling with 1280x1024 unless that game has serious problems developer side.

I'm doing BF3 on a single HD4870, and a dual-core CPU with no problems. 1600x1200 and fairly decent settings.

    Re: Could a 4870x2 run BF3?

BF3 is VERY scalable, I've been playing with someone who was on a 8800GT, albeit on low. Game was at 1680x1050 I believe and he was getting about 35fps, with a few dips into the 20s

My aim observation is that it seems to require a large framebuffer / video card RAM at higher settings. So seem the Ambient Occlusion off, the AA off, the textures to medium and you'll be fine.

    Re: Could a 4870x2 run BF3?

HD 4870 x2 is an amazing card.

    I am doing it on a HD 4870 512MB at 1440x900.

I tested Bad Company 2 out at 1900x1080 and managed medium. So I would guess 1600x1200 or lower should be easy to run with it.

I was worried about my card being able to run it, turns out I should of been more worried about my CPU.

    Re: Could a 4870x2 run BF3?

To be honest, I think that NVIDIA, AMD and Intel all owe DICE a share of their last 2 months profits... No doubt a good percentage of upgrades were due to this game being released and needing a pretty decent computer to run at the higher settings..

    Re: Could a 4870x2 run BF3?

A mate of mine has a HD4870 512mb gaming @ 1440x900 and it seems to be struggling on bf3.

He's not sure if it is his card or one of Dice's patches as it seemed ok when it was first released so he's just bought a gtx460 1GB hoping to play it more smoothly.
