    multi monitors

Alright so I haven't got sli. For me one 560 ti card is enough but I may upgrade in the future. Anyway what i want to know is I can have two monitors ran through this card. If i buy another cheaper card and connect that up can I run another 2 monitors through that bringing the total to 4. If i can then what would the nature of these 4 displays be. Specifcally, can I 'extend' my 'view' through all 4 monitors the same as with 2 monitors on one graphics card?

Oh just incase I'm confusing people I don't mean by buying the cheaper card to try and set it up in sli (I realise you need 2 of the same card) but I read somewhere that if your running multimonitors you can just put in extra graphics cards. Also I would game on only one monitor, the extra monitors are purely for convenience in everyday work and video watching.

If your mobo will take another graphics card then yes, you can. Probably best to stick with a low end nvidia to avoid any risk of driver conflict (although it *shouldn't* matter nowadays). The four monitors will show up in display properties as individual monitors: you'll set one as the primary then you should be able to choose to either extend or clone to each display: by the sounds of it you'll want to extend to each monitor which should be fine.

    Re: multi monitors

Would it work to run 3 screens off a single 6990 or similar? I assume it's not a problem given their 5 outputs!

yes, you can do this. cheaper cards also support 3 screens - look for eyefinity. some require the third screen to have display port (or at least a converter to DP to put into the card) but you don't have to go for a 6990 to get 3 screens. Full eyefinity is 6 screens 2 cards running 3 screens each which is what the 6990 is leaning towards.
