    Difference between the 9800s

What the difference between the 9800 Pro, XT and SE models? It so confusing

    Any significant performance differences?

The SE's are the cheapest and slowest, but often soft-moddable into a 9800Pro I think. The XT is the fastest of them.

I don't know a great deal as I'm sat on a lowly 9600pro (yeah right, it still kicks ass!)
    PHP Code:

    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

good work Monkey...there are lower versions tho...a 9800 is not the same as an SE I dont think

note the TWO versions of the 9800Pro...the second one is the more normal and currently best value all round

yeah thats why I added them, I'm trying to get the specs of the legendary 9800 pro with the 128 Bit memory thats floating about in the shops

As for the SE - even ATi haven't added that to their website as yet... So I've emailed them for the specs so I can add them to the above post

    Best Regards

The spec for pretty much every graphics card both Nvidia and ATI can be found here. This is a great reference table IMO.

    http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx...var1=88&var2=0

9800pro's now in two flavours 128bit memory bus ( bad ) or 256bit memory bus (good )

    Avoid 9800SE & the 9800pro 128 bit versions

Best value would be 128mb 9800pro 256bit bus

Not much performance difference between Pro & XT cards but a massive price difference so not worth it

No difference in performance between 128mb RAM and 256MB. IMO not worth getting 256MB version on any 9800 series card.

I got a 9800SE AIW (with 256-bit memory bus)... it's 380MHz core, same as 9800pro. the only difference between them is that the SE only has 4 pipelines, while 9800pro has 8. The memory clocks are the same aswell, don't remember exactly but about 700 DDR I believe.

Some SEs can be modded to PROs by activating the last 4 pipelines, but not all. Mine can't for example. And the performance difference is quite big. So as of today I'd get a 9800pro. Best value for the money.

You are correct in saying that certain 9800se can be modded, but not all. Well, actually all 9800se can be modded to 8 pipes, but it doesn't always give good results and it doesn't automatically give you 256bit memory.

To get a proper 9800 from an SE you need to have an SE with a 256bit memory bus, the best way to achieve this is with an AIW card as they are built on the same pcb as the pro aiw.

The main problem you get is that the reason the 4 pipes are disabled is because they may be broken, and hence will give rendering artifacts when you turn them back on. I'm lucky in that mine didn't but I know a lot do.

To be honest, unless you want the AIW features it's actually better to go wih the 9800pro 128mb 256bit card at the moment, the price difference is slim and the pro can be cheaper.
