    What would you buy?

For the past year i've been using a GTX580, and recently switched to a 7950 due to generally preferring ATI/AMD (though i wouldn't consider myself a fanboy as i always go for the best card rather than sticking with one brand, hence the 580)

Sadly I'm realising that the games i'm playing simply don't need the level of performance these cards give out, even if i am playing at 2560x1440, so with that in mind I'm considering a down grade to try and reclaim some possibly wasted money.

At the moment all the games i play are all source engine based, and soon i'll add guild wars 2 to that (can't wait!!!) I can't see any major games coming out in the next year that will ever push my system to it's limit, so based on the res i'm playing in and the rest of my spec which you can see on the left, what card would you recommend i go for? I've not bought mid or mid-high range in years

In an ideal world that's what i'd do but i could probably do with the money over the card which is why i was looking to downgrade now.

You will regret downgrading- i have done it in the past to just buy the same part a few months down the line.

    Re: What would you buy?

It depends if you can get a decent enough price for your current card or not. If you can, then the downgrade may be a good idea as you will have spare cash right now and then, when you need added performance, an upgrade card should be cheaper.

On the other hand, you will be selling your current card and purchasing a slower card which will be harder to sell in the future when you do decide to upgrade.

It's always nice to have fast hardware, but you have made that point that it is being wasted which leads me to believe that a downgrade may be a cost-effective idea. Yes, you may regret it soon, but you may also regret keeping your overpowered card also.

Then I would suggest selling the card now before Kepler is released or demoed in the next few weeks.

An HD6870 1GB can be had for around £120 to £130 if you shop around.

I'd stick with what you have. You'll regret downgrading sooner or later but, probably alot quicker than you think.

    Re: What would you buy?

I wound not suggest you to sell it and buy a downgrade version. If you have a good card, you can basically stick with that one foe years.

    Re: What would you buy?

Another vote to stick it out. Currently PC gamers are a bit hampered with the crappy capabilities of the PS3 and XBox 360 as developers dont bether optomising for PCs to a great level. The eew consoles will be announced this year and that should give them a boot up their arse to try and make things a bit more... awesome (graphically of course)
