Here have a read of this

My understanding, there are two modes
I-mode = this uses the onboard graphics, but kicks in the graphics card when a .exe from the given list is run
To use this mode you have to have the monitor detection set in the BIOS to the Onboard
down sides, slight performance loss, ass software which should use the discrete card needs to be added to the list and compatible.
D-mode = this is just using a discrete card but still having int IGP available for Quick Sync
To use this mode you have to have the monitor detection set in the BIOS to the pci-e slot
Down sides, not much, possible high power demands, however it depends on what graphics card you're using, most current graphics cards run near idle anyway when not gaming so there's little power saved.
Note: I'm going off the listed experience from that thread, the offical intel documents say.

ie the only offically supported way to do it is to connect both monitors two ether the motherboard or the graphics card, not both.
This is why you'd want to change the first display setting in the BIOS.
You may need to do some swapping around of cables to get it right.
