Green screen problem with GTX 470

I've recently just bought a GTX 470 from Jonathon Phang on here, and in the most part, the card works absolutely fine, and I'm happy to keep it, but there's one small problem.

DVI Port 1 works absolutely fine.
DVI Port 2 is where I'm having an issue.

When I plug in a DVI to HDMI cable and plug it into my Samsung TV, the picture is fine, the colours are bang on, but if I use a DVI to VGA connector, everything goes green, there is still a picture, but there's no blue or red in the picture.

I've tried different monitors, different cables and different DVI to VGA connectors but none of them work.

Does anyone have any idea what I can try?

Re: Green screen problem with GTX 470

Perhaps some limitation of the TV and VGA connection - assuming the DVI->VGA does the same thing on port 1?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Green screen problem with GTX 470

Seems to be a known issue when going from DVI to VGA. Something to do with the RGB colour space and pins on the connectors. Are all the pins OK ?

Should I be checking the pins in the DVI connector on the graphics card?

If you've tried multiple different adaptors - yes.
If not, buy/borrow a new one. I have one at home I think. Happy for you to have it for the cost of postage.

Re: Green screen problem with GTX 470

There's only one real problem tbh, the pins are inside the casing, so very difficult to see if there's anything wrong with them.

I've blasted them with canned air, will try it again now.

Re: Green screen problem with GTX 470

It's the top port, on that photo, that is the problem.

Cleaning it out with compressed air hasn't worked

The port clearly works, cos it's displaying a picture and it works absolutely fine when using DVI, it's just when I connect a VGA cable it that it becomes a problem

Re: Green screen problem with GTX 470

Google tells me that some people fixed this with new adaptors or cables. This thread now appearing !

You've tried different versions of both ? It does seem to be that the VGA standrad passes colurs individually (IANAE) and a broken wire or bent pin is the most likely culprit.

I've tried different DVI -> VGA adapters, different monitors, and different cables.. None of which have worked. But they all work fine in DVI Port 1.

I think a bent pin/connector in that port. Is there any other way of using the port ? Some sort of DVI to HDMI kludge ?

Well there's a mini-HDMI port, but I don't know if a mini-HDMI to VGA cable will work tbh..

Do you reckon it'll be worth a punt? Then I can just totally ignore the DVI Port that's not fully working

    It won't

The DVI port also has analogue out along side the digital output. HDMI is pure digital.

Without some sort of external DAC, you won't be able to use it for analogue.

Ah, that's a bit of a bummer, but I'm glad I didn't just go ahead and order one!

There are cables that do mini-HDMI to VGA.. So are they just a con or are there devices that have special hardware that can make use of such a thing?

Some obscure hardware hardware has it's own custom implementation over the cable. At the end of the day, HDMI and D-sub are just connections. You could make a cable that has HDMI one end and a RJ45 the other and route network traffic over it fine if you set up the hardware each end to understand it.

Thankfully in this case it's simple: HDMI in terms of an image signal has no analogue output, therefore to convert it you need something 'active' to do so.

Is that sort of hardware expensive?
