    ATI 4850 To 6850

Is it really worth it ?

Scan have 1Gb 6850 on sale for £83 which when you consider i paid £50 to get my 4850 is not a bad deal.

But is it really worth it ? or would it be better spending say another 20/40 quid and get something else ?

The things that need to be consided are the fact that i am in a shuttle so heat / noise and power requirements mean more to me then out and out performance (and i think that the rig would hold the really top end stuff back)

    Thoughts ?

I'd be interested too - my system is a very similar spec, so wondering how big the benefits would be

One thing I would watch is the length of the card if your system spec is up to date and you are trying to get that into a Shuttle

Not sure on the X48 as I had the X38P2 Shuttle a while back and it just about took a 8800GTS in there.

I know its a 4870 but it is similar and going from that chart I'd say it was worth upgrading, even runs cooler.

A 7770 is not that far behind the 6850 on some of them and in others it mullers the 6850 :s

    Re: ATI 4850 To 6850

I went from an overclocked HD4830 with an Akasa Vortexx Neo to a reference HD5850 1GB. It fitted fine in my SD37P2. I have the more powerful 450W PSU than the normal 400W job in the SD37P2. AFAIK,the SX48P2E has an improved 450W PSU.

I managed to run an overclocked Q6600 running at 3GHZ and the HD5850 1GB overclocked to around 925MHZ for the core and 1200MHZ for the RAM fine.

The HD6850 1GB is slightly slower than the HD5850 1GB and my HD4830 was overclocked(I suspect it was just below HD4850 level performnace),and yet the HD5850 1GB was a decent upgrade IMHO.

Hence,I think the HD6850 1GB would be a good upgrade IMHO.

    Edit!!

I would check the length of the card Scan are selling though, It seems to be an Asus one.

It seems the card is around 9.5" long:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4002/a...asus-xfx-msi/3

Now,you need to check whether the top sections of the heatpipes used will clash with the top of the case, and whether the PCB will clash with the motherboard power connector at the front of the case.

I was waiting for you Cat =)

For 80 quid is bit hard to say no to - also just done a quick check online and i have 150+ watts left in the psu to play with so if the 6850 uses less then this gives even more headroom =)

    Re: ATI 4850 To 6850

Current card is just under 9" long so that will fit easy enough (and it doesn't foul the mobo connector) - as for height i'll have a gander at it now

Current card height is 4" - with a good 1" to play with (1.3 before anything is likely to foul)

    Re: ATI 4850 To 6850

Nope was just waiting on Cat chipping in hehe ^_^

I've been running with this 4850 for 2yrs now and felt it was time to upgrade slighty.

As to the future who knows; the card might get carried over to a new build or it might get scrapped when and if i was to build a new rig from scratch (generally never have that sort of money always been small steps in upgrades)

Next on the list SSD and possibly a new TFT (and if i get the SSD Win7 Time )

    Re: ATI 4850 To 6850

I went from a 4870 1GB to a 6870 mid last year. There is a very noticeable improvement in any games where the 4870 was limiting performance. A 6850 isn't much slower.
I was looking forward to much better idle power consumption but it's not that much better as I have 2 screens and that prevents the 68xx cards from idling properly.

So how much difference are you noticing?

I've just placed an order for a 7870 to upgrade from a 4870 and am very much looking forward to seeing what the difference is like!

    Re: ATI 4850 To 6850

Noise is the first thing i noticed; even when i crank the fan to 100% it's still makes less noise then the old 4850 by miles.

It seems smoother in the desktop; things just feel a little more snappier.

Game framerate am yet to test properly but subjectivly it feels smoother =)

(might just have to crank this Q6600 up a notch more)
