    Triple Monitors

    Lo dudes

I've been using my 6850 with two monitors for a while now.. one landscape for gaming, the other portrait for email, media player etc.

    I do similar at work.

But I was thinking of trying triple monitors for gaming.. prolly only as a trial run. But I actualyl don't know how to do it. My monitors are all DVI/VGA, and I have access to a third one to have a matching triple.

Do I use trhe two DVI outputs and a third one from the Diplay Port slot? If so, and presuming I don't have a display port to DVI dongle, where doI buy one?

And is it, actually, worth the arse ache?

    Next Question:
Diff person, diff system... he's going to rebuild new PC and wants triple monitors for Eve. Should I point him to nVidia as the latest beasts seem to have three DVI outputs, and it all looks a lot clearer!

    Re: Triple Monitors

The GTX680 only has two DVI outputs.

TBH,I would wait until April/May for the GTX670 and GTX670TI to be released. Hopefully, this will mean both the HD7870 and HD7950 will drop in price and you can get the best value for money card.

    Edit!!

The adaptors you are talking about are easy to get:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-...ables-adaptors

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/produc...929&catid=1757

The Sapphire and XFX ones should work IMHO as they are probably meant for AMD cards and so will any similar ones AFAIK.

    Re: Triple Monitors

so I need an Active Display Port Adaptor to go with my 2 DVI outputs?

that way I can then plug a third DVI monitor in?

AFAIK,this is what I gather you need to do. TBH,I have never run more than two monitors off my HD5850 1GB so have not tried it myself.

looked great on paper.... might be more hassle than it's worth to make the space for all 3

    Re: Triple Monitors

Space for 4 is a killer

I use 2 monitors now but only use one for gaming, the other deals with teamspeak and a web browser or something else that I can do while waiting to respawn.

    Re: Triple Monitors

You will also need to make sure its a full sized display port and not mini ones as the ones on 6950's are as I found out to my annoyance.

2 monitors to your dvi ports and 1 hooked up to a display port by adapter and your ready to go. Also remember you will need to dial down the settings in the games as tripple your standard res is quite a bit more demanding for 1 card thats the reason I went x-fire as my 1 6950 was struggling at 5760*1080.

I will warn you it is a lot of hastle as you find some games still dont support eyefinity properley even though they say they do eg battlefield 3, skyrim needs modding to play properley otherwise you cant access the menus etc but looks fantastic to play with the high def patch on 3 screens.

    Re: Triple Monitors

    I'm thinking of two things.

one is my mate who will play Eve on two accounts on two screens, while using the third for web, comms forums etc.

and one setup is for me.. just to see if I can get IL-2 to run nicely with 3 :-)

    Re: Triple Monitors

Just for your info I believe the XFX 7870 cards have two DVI and an HDMI port in addition to the two mini DP ports. Not sure if you could set up 3 monitors without using any of the DP as one of the DVI ports is a single link, not dual link, but I don't know enough about running more than 2 monitors. Just saw the extra DVI when shopping around for 7870's

    Re: Triple Monitors

this is a mess of confusing jargon.. not suprised really.

    OK.. first thing. I have a 6950.. not a 6850.

I have two DVI outputs from it... both currently in use.

it ALSO has 2 MINI Display port outputs & what looks like an HDMI port.

AMD's site says, and I quote
    DisplayPort 1.2
    Max resolution: 2560x1600 per display
    Multi-Stream Transport
    21.6 Gbps bandwidth
    High bit-rate audio
HDMI 1.4a with Stereoscopic 3D Frame Packing Format, Deep Color, xvYCC wide gamut support, and high bit-rate audio
    Max resolution: 1920x1200
    Dual-link DVI with HDCP
    Max resolution: 2560x1600
    VGA
    Max resolution: 2048x1536
the card doesn't have a VGA output, just a traditional DVI to VGA convertor so I'm guessing that's what they mean.

Now.. can I convert an HDMI to a DVI or VGA so I can get a third monitor of the same resolution for a triple header?

    ie.. would buying this
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/icidu...-converter-v52

allow a third monitor to work, or am I breaking a rule on the GPU set up that stops that working?

The Display Ports (both mini) have a dongle convertor to DVI... so I could use that TOO!!!!

back of my PC would have more convertors than is attractive but hey.. .this stuff is sent to try us.. and block airflow

    Re: Triple Monitors

i dont think you can use 2 x DVI and HDMI, that wont work because of the way the display drivers (hardware drivers that is) work. I think you have to use display port to some desgree if you want to get eyefinity to work

You can drive 2 HDMI/DVI screens and one displayport screen from the card. IIRC you can swap one of the DVI screend for a VGAone.
The only way to drive 3 screens from an AMD 6000/5000 series card is with at least 1 displayport monitor. This applies to all cards in both ranges. No exceptions.
It's something to do with clock drivers or some whirlygidget.

that's the vibe I'm getting, having whirled through WIkipedia and AMD's site etc.

so.. the DMI port is prolly linked to one or both of the DVI ports, and prolly can't be used with them both in use?

    Re: Triple Monitors

no.. hold up... I think I CAN use a Display port active convertor, as per CAT's post that converts to a DVI cable.

    ie

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/start...active-adapter

    oh what a mess

Except the Sapphire Flex edition cards, which have an additional clock generator built in

But yeah, unless you have a Sapphire Flex you *must* use a Displayport output with an active adapter as HDMI/DVI both need a clock generator and the AMD cards only have two built in (which are used to drive any two out of the DVI and HDMI outputs). You can use two mini-DP active adapters to drive four monitors, if oyu so desire. But you cannot use both DVIs and the HDMI to drive 3 monitors: only two of them will work.
