    Mr. Tight's graphics card

    Hi all,

I'm currently using a Geforce 8600GTS on a Athlon X3 445, 4GB RAM and Corsair CX400 (the good one!) PSU. The geforce runs hot, but I'd ideally like something efficient as this computer is on A LOT - either playing games or DVDs etc.

Common sense says the Radeon 7750 would be ideal - runs off the power from the slot, etc, but for the performance £80 seems a bit steep. As it's "last gen", Ebuyer are flogging some 6670 DDR3's for £49. Being slot powered, it fits the efficiency and wallet mix - worth getting? Stats suggest it would be about twice the speed of the 8600GTS. Any suggestions for someone who's wallet get less sunlight than Dracula in the winter?

    Re: Mr. Tight's graphics card

The 6670 is 2-3 times faster then the 8600GTS, the 7750 is 4-5 times faster.

The 6670 may not give it's best performance in some titles due to the GDDR3 though.

The price of the 7750 isn't bad....it's a tad slower then a 550ti and costs a tenner less.....it's performance to power ratio is staggering compared to what you currently have as well 4-5 times the power, 20% less power draw....and thats at peek. At idle and when playing films, I fully expect the 7750 to be substantially more energy efficient.

    Re: Mr. Tight's graphics card

I have a very similar system (9800GT, more memory) and have been wondering about that level of card. The cost seems reasonable and with the PC being on most of the time, getting the power draw down is always in mind. The card's heat isn't a bad thing on chilly nights like this but it can be an unpleasant addition to the room when the mercury's sliding up the scale.

    Re: Mr. Tight's graphics card

You can use this to get a general idea of how fast a card is and how much power it draws:

    http://pc-erfahrung.de/grafikkarte/v...rangliste.html

It's in German, but as it's basically just a giant table it's pretty much self explanatory.
The two right-most columns are the power consumption (max. and idle)

Use your browsers search function to find cards quicker (CTRL+F or F3)

    8600GTS rank 110
    HD6670 w. GDDR5 rank 53 (DDR3 version seems to be missing)
    HD7750 rank 43

Unless you're after silent cards, I wouldn't worry too much about the power consumption though.
The good ol' CX400 has 30A (360W) on 12V, which is exactly the same as my Seasonic S12II 430 (on which the Corsair is based on).
If you now take a look at my specs thing on the left, you've got a lot of headroom there.

The Athlon II X3 445 has a TDP of 95W like my Core 2 Quad Q6600 on stock clocks. Mine is overclocked by quite a bit though, so power consumption is noticeably higher than 95W for me.
The HD6870 is rated at 151W max., your current 8600GTS is rated 71W max.
And to top it off, I've had far more power-hungry cards in my system before, like a first-gen GTX260 (182W) and the system was perfectly fine with that.

In other words: You could easily go for a card with a higher wattage rating without your PSU taking a crap. No need to stay stay below the 75W PCIe slot limit, unless (like I said before) you're after super silent cards.

The CX400 has one 6pin PCIe plug, so you could go for a HD7770, HD6850 or HD7850 if it's within your budget. The PSU would definitely have no probs with that and all those cards only need one 6pin plug.

Little tip: The older HD6850 is a couple notches above the HD7750 performance wise (rank 26 vs. 43), and costs around 90pounds on scan.
According to a thread on here, it seems most people got an Asus card instead of the weird looking one in the picture.

    Re: Mr. Tight's graphics card

The HD6670 usually comes with GDDR5 so with GDDR3 will be much slower.

I would look at the HD6850 1GB for around £80 to £90. It will run fine off your CX400W and will be nearly as fast as an HD5850 1GB.

I subscribe to CAT-THE-FIFTH 's opinion. This is a cracking card, draws little power and will definitely fit with you 400W PSU. My overclocked 560TI 448 cores + core i5 750 draws about 320W-350W at full load, and about 300W during games.

Geile Seite! Hat ja (fast) alle Info auf einer Seite, sehr nützlich.

To the OP: I was watching some ebay auctions and came across the DDR3 version of the 6670 and I was unable to find any benchmarks vs the GDDR5 version - seems the usual thing of no site really reviewing low-end / value stuff. The closest is this comparison of the 5570s:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...r5,2704-7.html

I think at launch the 6670 only had GDDR5 and the GDDR3 snuck in later...

    Re: Mr. Tight's graphics card

for me POWER USE is only relevant at 2d app level.

Yeah I don't want to hear my electricity meter spinning off the wall while gaming but it's bound to increase somewhat if I want a good gaming experience.

and therefore....I don't mind something using power from a PCI express power plug, or even two of them, while gaming.... but once I drop out of a game I'm interested in the card knocking it's power level right back.

For this reason I'm gonna back CAT's suggestion of a 6850 card.

I have one with double that ram and it's very efficient in 2d mode.

This is the HEXUS POWER DRAW chart for this style of card in a recent review

ignoring the 1w difference.. what I'm pointing out is that the power draw is v low on these cards across the board... AND they play v well indeed.

6850 gets my vote (esp the asus one) - 83 quid and it's quiet and runs the games i play at max settings =) -
