Radeon 5670 performance not quite as expected.

I've just bought an XFX Radeon 5670 1GB passive cooled card to replace my GeForce 8800GTS 320MB (less noise, less power usage). Like all good geeks should I decided to do a 3DMark Vantage test on both cards and was somewhat surprised to see that the 5670 scoring less than the 8800. I was expecting it to be at least equal, if not better, in most cases. This card has GDDR3 as opposed to the GDDR5 found in most 5670's, but I didn't think it would make too extreme a difference. Anyway, here are the results:

    GeForce 8800GTS - GPU 4710
    Ai Radeon 5670 - GPU 3657

GeForce drivers were uninstalled via Windows Device Manager before installing the Radeon and then installing the Catalyst drivers last. Windows is set to High Performance mode.

Sounds about right? Or should I be getting more?

    CPU is a Core 2 Duo E6420 OC'd to 3.2ghz.

The GDDR5 actually makes a very large difference and this is down to the fact that the HD5670 has a 128 bit memory controller.

    Edit!!

Look at the following comparison between the HD5570 GDDR5 and HD5570 DDR3 in this article:

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/radeon...w-31972-7.html

The core clockspeeds are the same from what I gather in the article.

Blimey, that is quite a difference. I'll keep trying things to see if I can get a bit more performance out of it, however.

Re: Radeon 5670 performance not quite as expected.

The 8800GT is a bit faster in synthetics than the 5670. So the scores are to be expected. However, the 5670 is DX11 capable, so you can run the latest games. And it has a much lower power consumption.
Try overclocking your card, to see how much more you can get out of it. And at the end of the day, in-game performance matters the most...

Re: Radeon 5670 performance not quite as expected.

The GTS is not quite as good as the GT(X) and the 5670 should comfortably beat it. I have another 5670 in another machine; but that one is GDDR5 based, with a fan cooling system and it's a great performer. Strikes a great blend between price, power usage and noise. However, although they are DX11 capable, they're not going to be much good at it.

But no matter, I got this second card for £30 so it's a not a huge problem.
