Graphics card and console ports. Keep you money in your pocket.

What has amazed me over the past five years is how far ahead pc graphics cards are compared with the consoles. Yet it's the consoles that drive the games market now. Hence good & bad ports. I don't think anyone except a major enthusiast should drop more than £150 into a gfx these days as most games are console ports. There are exceptions of course. What major game releases are going to stretch mid range cards this year? I myself own a 570gtx which i bought last year will be more than adequate for next few years I won't spending more than £150 on a gfx card again unless more games take advantage of their power.

True to an extent but I guess it depends on the definition of 'major enthusiast'. A gamer might not want to have any game running at 60 fps all the time, but there are other things to take into account, such as resolution (with more 1920x1200 monitors getting out in the wild), and whether or not eye candy is turned up.

If a port is half decent technically, then its going to have a plethora of options, and I would say that most PC gamers know about AA, AF and having better textures etc, and at least try to turn them up a bit. Battlefield 3, Alan Wake are two games that have a decent set of PC specific options and can drag a system down. Not sure if a £150 would be fine with those two, but of course it wholly subjective about what is acceptable...

I remember when £150 what nearing top of the range too Prices are silly at the mo arent they!

    Anything from Rockstar?

Seriously, of course if you're looking for value for money then enthusiast cards aren't the way to go - in fact dedicated cards aren't the way to go either - the vast majority of PC games play perfectly fine on integrated GPUs now, it's only console ports and a very few others that require dedicated cards.

But we wouldn't be here if we were just interested in playing the majority of PC games - we're interested in that few percent that demonstrate modern technology.

    For the most part, yes.

I wouldn't give up BF3 on the PC....or Shogun2...or Gears of War. In fact, while console do drive the market (due to volume of sales and profit per unit) I cannot remember the last time I compared gfx between PC and console and thought "Pretty much a muchness".

The thing is, many gamers do not want jaw-dropping 60 fps graphics. We want a good storyline, well made script, fun gameplay. Look at minecraft, runescape and little big planet.

    ^ +1.
I agree, I don't care if I dip under 30 fps. More concerned about the storyline, I still use my old PS2, games back then were so much better, interesting and more addictive than now

You don't need amazing graphics for an amazing game.

Besides consoles are more of a family and people type of gameplay. Most people I know find it horrible to game on a PC, and most do not want to go to the hassle to build their own
