    Upgrading from 5770 --> 7850?

Got a 120hz 1080p monitor recently and my old 5770 is struggling somewhat (especially when 3D is even mentioned). £250 + whatever I can get from selling my 5770 is my absolute highest upgrade budget.

I've read around and the 7850 seems to be my best choice (unless anyone else has any other ideas) - good stock performance and very overclockable, low power usage (only a bit higher than my 5770 with over double the performance). A quiet PC is pretty important to me but I do want good performancerice as well - hence I'm looking mostly towards the 7850.
Has anyone done a comparison on the various 7850's around? In terms of software/cooler performance? / Does anyone have any suggestions for other cards? (Other than "wait for the mainstream kepler cards - I was planning on buying it mid next week)

    Thanks in advance

The cards in your price range are:

    1.)HD7850 2GB ~ £180 to £200

In between HD6950 2GB and HD6970 2GB performance. Has low power consumption and it seems with newer software,it can be overclocked to between 1150MHZ to 1200MHZ from the stock 860MHZ!!

    2.)HD6970 2GB ~ £225 from OcUK

    3.)GTX570 1.28GB ~ £200 to £225

Slightly quicker overall than an HD6970 2GB,but the latter has more VRAM which might prove useful

    4.)GTX560TI 448 1.28GB ~ £167 to £190

Very similar speed to a GTX570

    5.)GTX480 1.5GB ~ £180 to £190

Fastest card at stock clockspeeds under £200 but consumes a lot of power and can run hot in poorly ventilated cases.

The prices I quoted are approximate delivered prices.

The HD7850 and GTX560TI 448 are the cards which I think are the best compromise overall.

    - Another 5770 second hand. Best performance increase for the price, but you might want more umph.

    - 7870, assuming you can get at least £10 for your 5770. Even more performance than a 7850, but at the moment still quite a big jump in price.

Thanks! Very detailed. Only thing I don't like about the 560TI is the high TDP. 210w is pretty high, especially since it's still comparable to the 7850 in terms of performance.

Again, dual 5770s has a high TDP. I'm not really thinking about power usage here, more the noise the cooler would make.

How much better is the 7870 than the 7850? / is it as overclockable?

Both the HD7850 and HD7870 seem to hit very similar clockspeeds from what I gather. Of course the HD7870 has better stock performance.

And has more compute units etc. so it's faster even the same clockspeeds.

To answer the question, yes, it's just as overclockable, and about 15% faster. But it costs at least 15% more as well. Value for money the 7850 is better, but if it's within budget and the 15% would be noticeable then might be worth waiting for price drops on the 7870 - I expect they will drop more than the 7850 in the short term.

Might be worth waiting for the N-vidia cards, just released the oem versions....

I could, but the one I'd be looking at would be the 660/660ti and it's looking like that won't be out until August-ish, and I can't wait that long. At the moment my monitor is just being wasted with me only being able to play at 720p ish, hence me being after one in the next week.

Best I can find a 7870 for is £249.99, which is just inside my budget (that's for the Sapphire @stock speeds one).
Best I can find a 7850 for is £174.99 (again, Sapphire @stock speeds). Much nicer sounding price but is the 7870 really worth the extra £75? Though I'm also struggling to find a 7850 from a reputable source with a decent cooler in stock anywhere... (Sapphire/MSI/ASUS seem to be the best in terms of cooler/warranty I think. Though I could be wrong...)
If I were to throw 3D into the mix, would the 7870 benefit me more?
