    agp card help

Hi nephew has the following and is having trouble playing video files using vlc player, so would appreciate ant help on what the minimum specs are for playing different types of videos.

His specs are on an acer aspire sa85: P4 @3.2GHz, 2gb memory, win xp,SiS 661FX on board Graphics.

So at the moment the video stutters, would upgrading the graphics make any difference to what he can play and what card?

    Thanks

    Robert

    Re: agp card help

The onboard graphics are pretty low spec, so a discrete graphics card may well help things along. The machine is pretty old however, so any performance boost is going to be limited by the weakest component.

How old is the install of windows? It could be software related if it was playing videos fine before?

Thanks don't know how long the win instal has been on it tried to do a system restore but someone had cleared the asus back up partition.

As for the files yes they were hd-dvd rips and some hd downloads played through vlc.

His father would buy him a graphic card if it would help(ecommend any).

btw playing these on a 42" 3d tv

It should manage DVD quality but would struggle with B-ray. I would by a second hand video card off ebay, should do the trick. An ATI 1950pro would cost about £20. Check you have an AGP slot though!

They can afford a 42" 3d tv but not a decent upgrade to a 6+ year old computer? Talk about priorities...

Anyway, judgemental opinions aside, I really do think this is another (see this thread) case where buying an AGP card would be throwing good money down the drain when a complete new system could be put together for < £200 that would be superior in pretty much every way. AGP cards are hard to find and are not cheap - this HD3650 is the only product result if you search for AGP on ebuyer, and that's £40 for technology that's over 4 years (and 4 generations) old. It's certainly do-able, but I'd personally advise against it strongly, when saving up a relatively small additional amount could buy an entire PC that will be both faster and more energy efficient...

I agree that a new one would be a waste but a second hand card for ~£20 is worth a punt.
