    Re: Silly Question incoming

It depends on the monitor - HDMI is technically superior as you can carry sound via it too.

    Re: Silly Question incoming

They are effectively the same in most cases, however DVI can carry more video signal however it is unlikely your monitor will use these pins unless it states it requires a Dual Link DVI cable, HDMI uses the same amount of pins but 7 of them are used for 7 channel audio.

So the only advantage is sound?

Yeah, not going to make a difference unless the sound aspect interests you.

    Re: Silly Question incoming

don't forget that different HDMI standards offer different max resolutions

    HDMI 1 - 1080p
    HDMI 1.3 - 2560 x 1600

Carrying sound is a great feature but none of my monitors have speakers

True for monitors, but if you're using a TV as a PC monitor, it's ideal.

    Re: Silly Question incoming

I'd suggest which ever you have a cable for. (Unless as otherwise mentioned the sound part of HDMI is important to you)

    It depends....

Above 1920x1200 you will want dual link DVI......for anything else, it really doesn't matter.

Also...sound can be taken via DVI as well as HDMI.

If you want to use a HD TV as a hub for sound then HDMI 1.3-1.4a is better as it will even carry complex blueray audio and then the TV spit it out to headphones or surround speakers etc. You may also find it's cheaper to buy long HDMI 1.3+ cables vs DVI if you want say your PC 10 meters away from the TV!

Most Blueray 3d is easier to set up over HDMI 1.4a to a TV than using DVI from a PC as well. DVI is for Nvidia 3d these days. For plain old PC monitors HDMI-DVi is good, VGA (Dsub) is bad. Don't forget you can get DVi to HDMI and vice vs converters if you have a DVI output you want to use but only HDMI input (common on most 3D HDTV's now)

    Re: Silly Question incoming

On a purely connector level, DVI connectors are screwed in, HDMI aren't and so can be easily pulled out
