    Quick 9800xt speeds question.

    Hey all,

The official 9800xt specs are Core: 412mhz, Memory: 730mhz & Something else which i don't know what is.. Ramdac: 400mhz <-- (what is the ramdac anyway ?)
Anyway back to main question, my speeds are Engine: 411.75mhz, only 0.25mhx down which is ok. But powerstrip lists the memory speed as 364.50mhz ? is this speed powerstrip is giving a pre-ddr number or the total mhz level ? cause 364mhz, is quite a way of the officialy stated 730mhz..

    Cheers, Dave.

RAMDAC, I believe, and correct me if i'm wrong, is the frequency of data being sent to your display(s). RAM indicates the RAM that is used to store these images, and DAC is, well, Digital somthing I'm sure, something to do with converting Digital to Analouge signals. This is from memory so don't hold me to it . Digital analouge converter? digital analouge controller digital access controller, direct analouge controller, summint or other, do a google for it

To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

There is a section of video ram called the frame buffer, each time a new frame is finnished it gets written here. The RAMDAC chip has access to this memory and converts the digital stored data into analoge signals for your monitor.
DVI connections will skip the RAMDAC but it probably goes to another chip instead (this chip isa probably intergrated into the same physical package as the ramdac and any TV out features your card might have probab ly is also here).

The speed of the RAMDAC tells you how much analoge bandwidth you get. You need this b/w for higher resolutions and higher VSYNC freq (which also affects HSYNC etc...). When this b/w is mostly used you end up with less sharp images, or something.
