ARRGHH new monitor, can't get drivers + refresh rates sorted, need help!

OK well I got my 22" Compaq P1220 today, and got it set up. At the moment it is installed as "default monitor" and for some reason I can't seem to install the proper drivers for it. I ran an executable program from Compaq which contains the .INF files for the monitor but it still hasn't installed it properly, it still shows as "default monitor". And after installing this prog the P1220 isn't listed in the windows drivers list either.

This of course means that the refresh rates are set at something like 60mhz, and no matter what I set it to in my ATI control panel, 85mhz, 100mhz or whatever it flickers like a dead lamp. My eyes are begging for mercy.

I also tried one of those refresh rate fix progs and that didn't work either.

Seems like I need to get it properly recognised as a Compaq P1220 before it starts playing ball. My 6800GT is arriving tommorrow so I need this sorted ASAP, can anyone help me out pretty please with cherries on top?

Got the same issue here, my nice new tft is stuck in 60Hz because windows is a sucky pile of poo..

Tried all the registry tweaks and other programs to no avail :(

TFT's run at 60hz.

As for the compaq, have you run the update driver and pointed it at the inf file?

nope, not all tft's run at 60hz ;)

mine supports 70Hz +

No, there is no INF file mate, just a self-extracting .EXE file that supposedly installs COMPAQ's latest bunch of INF's on the computer. But when I try and look for them on the windows hardware device lists (when you manually try and update a driver) it just isn't there. I haven't a clue where it could have installed it to.

My eyes are almost bleeding here, it really hurts running at this refresh with this size screen.

Anyone who can help me solve this will be a saint, I need to sort it tonight. :(

I did clear out the monitors section of my registry though.. there were 29 monitor entries, most of them relating to the old one :rolleyes:

If you've got Winzip, you should be able to right-click and then extract to wherever you want - at least you can on the driver download from HERE

Edit: scratch that - it just unpacks the setup and supporting files :(

Right - do a search under the Windows installation folder for inf files containg the text P1220 - it should show something like "oem<number>.inf". That's your inf file. Right click and choose install.

Stoo you shouldnt notice any difference with 60hz or 70hz on a tft. Its all about response times, not refresh rate.:P

You do if you set your resolution below maximum, mines at 75Hz on 1280 x 1024, if I set it to 800 x 600 you can clearly see the difference, not least from the twinkling pixels :rant:

Right, I appreciate you boys discussing the finer points of refresh rates, but i'd really rather have some help right now, lol, this is killing me here, my eyes are watering and I have a headache. Please try and keep posts OT until I figure it out, after that you can chat all you want. I'm just pretty desperate to get it sorted right now... :(:D

If you install the inf file when you find it as outlined above, that should make your P1220 available when you update the driver via display settings (so long as you don't just let it search for it).

In the monitor setup page in the diplay properties make sure hide modes this monitor can not display is unticked, this should allow a larger selection of refresh rates.

Look in your registry..
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\

Go down the list until you find the entry relating to your monitor

Open that, look for the numbered entries (0000+), find the one which relates to your monitor, open that..
Open the MODES Key, create a new key for each resolution, eg "1600,1200" etc etc
then a new string for the refresh rate following "70-70,70-70" for a 70Hz refresh rate

If that doesn't work try getting hold of Powerstrip as it offers a huge amount of customising of refresh rates and should solve your problem. It let me run my ancient 23" Taxan monitor in a completely non-standard refresh rate and interlaced as well a couple of years back even though there were no windows drivers at all for it.

Yeah Stoo I found that on Google mate, couldnt get it to work though :mad: .

Im downloading Powerstrip now and i'll see if that has any effect... i'll report back in a minute. :rockon:

Well, I searched for the P1220 files on my computer like you suggested, and I found a relevant folder. The files in it, however, aren't the .INF type. So when I run that prog, it must install something to my computer, but for some reason its not showing up in any driver lists, and I don't know how to go from here.

If anyone wants to take 5 mins to really help me and download and unpack the file I used to see if they can get it seen on their computer, or if they can maybe figure out where im going wrong it would be much appreciated.
