upgrade to nvidea 5xx gt or 6xx gt?

I'm currently running a 9800 gtx which is nearing its 3rd birthday so I'm thinking of retiring it but I'm not sure what to change it for.
Budget is probably about £150 but could stretch higher

    Would a higher range gt/gtx 5xx card be a better buy than a lower range gt/gtx 6xx?
Other than that what card does everyone recommend?

    Thanks

Edit: CPU is an Intel Q6600 overclocked to 3.0Ghz accompanied by 4Gb of RAM, OS is windows vista 64 bit (am also contemplating an upgrade to 7 but with 8 looking to appear in the near future I'm unsure). Power comes via a corsair 520W modular PSU.

The 560Ti is the best bet at around £150, but if you can afford a bit more then you can find HD7850s for under £200, which will perform much better and draw less power.

How about the 6950 2GB ? It is £160 ATM with the option to switch to 6970 specs! However the power may be a bit tight, give it a look http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-299-SP.

    When I said £150 I was being a little optimistic & forgetting that I'm a penny-less student. Around £50 is more realistic

    Any new thoughts now?

    Thanks

Have a look around for an AMD 6670, or better the 6770. Recently PC World was selling the 6770 for £45, which was a really good deal. You'll perhaps be better off looking at second hand options, see if you can find an AMD 6850.

The HD 6570 is a lot faster than the GT 520, but it won't be great for games. If you can overclock it you might be able to run a lot of things on medium settings.

It depends what resolution you're playing at and what kind of games. e.g. don't expect to play Crysis 2 at 1920x1080, but something like Bioshock would be fine.

If you can stretch a bit higher you'd get a HUGE improvement. The 7750s can be found for about £80.

I would get yourself on ebay for around £50 youll scoop up a GTX 460 which will be a big improvement over your current card.

Re: upgrade to nvidea 5xx gt or 6xx gt?

I think I'm playing at 1650x1080 but I can't remember off the top of my head, does that sound like it could be right? Probably lower for the 2 crysis's.

£80 I could probably stretch to, I'll look again...

Are cards off eBay trustable? You don't know how much the previous owner flogged it or why they are selling it

If there's any chance you can stretch to an HD7750, don't consider the 6570 even for a second. The 7750 is AMD's latest range, overclocks really well, draws really low power.

edit: I did a quick search, and Dabs has a 7750 at £80.

An HD6850 can be had for £80 to £90. That is what I would look at getting.

Your 9800GTX is around GTS450 or HD6750 level already, The HD7750 is around HD6770 level.

The 6850 will definitely outperform the 7750, but can you get them new for £80? They were about £110 when I last looked.

The 7750 is about the same as the 6770, but it's likely to overclock a lot better, it definitely draws much less power, and will perform better in games that use tessellation. You've also got a few extra driver features with the 7xxx series.
