    PNY 6800GT review

    Hi,

Just thought I'd post here for those who haven't caught the link off Nvnews: there's a review of the PNY 6800GT on 3dgpu.com. Might be of some value to those of you thinking of this card, as they seem to be one of the few that are readily available at the moment.

It's a shame the reviewer didn't have a more powerful rig, as a 2GHz P4 really isn't a decent match for this type of card, IMHO. I'm running at P4 @3.5GHz, so it'll be interesting to compare my benchies with his when my PNY 6800GT turns up today.

    Cheers,

Yep, turned up without a problem. Qudos to PCW. Had it slipping along nicely for 3 days now at 400/1100 - base Ultra speeds. 3DMark03 hits 12500. Been off work this week, so I've spent literally every day playing games on it (COD, Splinter Cell - P.T, GTA Vice City, FarCry, UT2004, etc., etc). I haven't seen daylight since last weekend. Really must go outside to see if the world is still there! :-)

Loving the card. Well worth the pennies, IMHO (esp. with the 'free' FarCry).

All GT's with the reference cooler design are noisy. The Leadtek is one of the quietest as they have their own cooler on it. You could always get an Arctic Cooler for it when they are out in a few weeks.

Nope, mine is real quiet. Can't understand where people get this 'loud' comment from? I have a CoolerMaster case with 4x80mm fans, and there is no way I can hear the GT above them. Now they aren't loud, but mine isn't a 'silent' PC either. I was really nervous about getting a GT after all I'd read about noise, but in the end thought 'what the hell'. In all honesty noise has not been an issue: once windows boots and the driver kicks in, the card is very quiet, IMHO. It's just that MHO might be different to someone else's, especially those with near silent PCs. Oh, and once I'm playing a game, I can't hear a bloody thing above the gunfire! :-)

My next project might be to play with water, but as you can't get any blocks for the 6800's I think I'm going to hold fire. I'd prefer a kit that does both my CPU and GPU. Having said that, I'll be doing it just for a laugh, and not to make my PC quieter. Might be worth waiting for that sort of stuff for those of you who want a silent PC (or the Arctic for those who are financially challenged...:-))

Platinum: Need to update your sig., then. You still have the 6800GT as "on order". You should change it to "It's here, and it's LOUD!" :-)
