I think I'll wait for ATi to release their doom3 driverset before I make any sort of judgement on this.
Latest Far Cry benchies and the x800pro and the 6800GT are about equal. Makes me think the x800 will come good in doom 3 with a little work on the openGL drivers. Wait and see I shall.
Sound like yoda I do.
If ATi's OpenGL drivers were decent then surely performance in Linux games would be half decent? Well I'm afraid it isn't on this 9600 Pro!
I'm fast being converted. I think at the end of the year I'll be changing over.
The problem with waiting for the next driver set for the X800 is that the next gen cards won't be far away (they could even be waiting for the next gen!). Plus ATi have had 4 years odd notice of Doom III, and even more years since the first Radeon was released. I think the majority of the advantages the new drivers will bring is full (or as close as possible) compliance to OpenGL. Probably no more than 10fps more since the existing OpenGL set will already be very optimised and fast. Of course if they do become signficantly more compliant, existing games may require patching since the workarounds for driver bugs may cause bugs themselves.
Buy an Nvidia graphica cards then. If you think its the best choice for you...Originally Posted by Zak33

Atis cards [seem to] take shortcuts, and while this lets them win on price and performance in current games [not inc doom3] recent events have shown that nvidia are once again coming out on top I only own a 9800pro now cos i couldnt afford a fx5950 ;/
I think most people are agreed that ATi have had the edge during the 9700 - 9800XT releases. Can't really see Nvidia was the best choice during that time.
Also, Spud, your sig, with the Heuxs rating, gap, Sig picture, gap and then listed specs, is too big. See if you can make the whole thing smaller. Thanks.
get the PNY one. safer betOriginally Posted by Big_Al
