    Budget Graphics Card

    Hi all,

    I'm searching for a budget graphic card with 2G memory and found;

    Inno3D GT520 2GB Graphics Card spec
    getprice.com.au/Inno3D-GT520-2GB-Graphics-Card.htm#more-details

    I don't game.

    Has any folk on the forum tried this card before? Is there any driver problem for Linux? Pls advise. TIA

    Anything more than 256MB for such a low end card is really pointless IMHO. You could easily run two monitors off a card with even less VRAM.

    I have to echo CAT - why are you so worried about 2GB of graphics memory? I can only assume that you have some specific use in mind?

    Actually I need a budget graphic card to go to;
    ASUS M5A99X EVO AMD 990X,DDR3,USB3.0,SATA3 6Gb/s,ATX M/B
    asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A99X_EVO/#specifications

    Some folks on Internet said graphic being slow with 1G memory. I don't game. The new box to be built will be for testing ONLY. Most times I'll run commands on terminal to configure the servers running as VMs on VirtualBox. Graphic is NOT important to me. I only run desktop occasionally. However I don't expect the graphic being too slow.

    Any suggestion? TIA

    Re: Budget Graphics Card

    Just get the cheapest PCIe graphics card you can buy - something like an AMD 5450 or an NVIDIA G210. You certainly don't need masses of VRAM - 256MB/512MB will be plenty. Even onboard graphics can easily run a graphical desktop quickly.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your advice.

    I absolutely agree with you.

    I don't game. Neither I'll do graphic editing on the new box which is for testing ONLY. There are about 30 VMs installed but not all running at the same time. Most VMs are servers. I do configuration on terminal with commands only.

    My preliminary configuration:-

    CPU AMD 8-Core FX-8120 3.1GHz/16M CPU [AM3+] FD8120FRGUBOX

    Corsair Vengeance CML16GX3M4A1600C9 DDR3 1600 16G Kit (4Gx4)

    ASUS M5A88-M AMD 880G,DDR3,USB3.0,SATA3 6Gb/s,M.ATX M/B
    asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A88M/#specifications
    (graphic onboard)

    Then I heard some noisy on Internet, onboard graphic having problem with driver for Linux. Therefore I change my mind.

    Any advice about driver for Linux of abovementioned mobo? TIA

    Re: Budget Graphics Card

    The amount of memory on your graphics card won't affect your performance outside of games. Just get the cheapest you can find, as above - a 5450 would be fine.

    Virtual machines use system memory for the virtual graphics card.

    As for Linux, you'll have no problems with any recent nvidia or AMD card. There have been some problems with Intel integrated drivers in Linux, but that's really concerning gaming and 3D performance.

    Thanks for your advice.

    My first configuration was to get a mobo with onboard graphic. After having heard some noisy on the problem of nVidia driver and suggestion from other folks not to get mobo with onboard graphic I changed my config to present selection.

    Actually I expect to install 32G RAM. But there is some problem on 8G module. I'm forced changing the config to 16G RAM

    OR

    ASUS HD6450 silent and low profile graphics card with DirectX®11 and HDMI support

    Both are passive card, not so noisy and having more or less the same price. I think I'll select HD6450. Any comment? TIA
