    gtx 260 overclocking then downclocking

bought a gtx 260 216core 55nm SSC off ebay pretty cheap,
    pretty happy with it atm,
just when i try overclock to slightly
it will switch down to 400mhz and stay there until i shutdown,
and when i try adjust the 400 to 675mhz(default)
    it wont allow me,
also getting a squeal on the card but judging by looking around this is very common

anyone know why it downclocks automatically? driver issue?

Re: gtx 260 overclocking then downclocking

Check your power settings in case a power saving feature is being activated.

It could be that the card doesn't have any OC headroom and when you try to overclock it drops to a default "safe" clock (to avoid damage) and needs resetting. The SSC starts with a pretty hefty overclock anyway (670MHz v 576MHz stock). What tool are you using to overclock?

Have you installed the latest drivers? There could be a driver issue.

There is a safety feature that downclocks your card and won't budge until restart. iirc there no way round it apart from avoiding dodgy OCs.

Sutty, I had a geforce 5700 that was exactly like this - it was perfectly stable at stock, but wouldn't budge on overclocking. You don't have a great deal of power overhead, and possibly little thermal as well. I would keep it at stock if it runs fine. If you really want to overclock you need to check you have spare power and thermal capacity in the computer.

What i said a double posting the guys is on about a whining noise from either his GPU or PSU and he posts different but similar post here so he's answered his own query in his first post about the whining noise as he states "also getting a squeal on the card but judging by looking around this is very common" so why double post even though its in a different context.......

You've answered your own question there - it's a different context; two different questions, two different threads. Also, the fact that he's getting GPU whine could be relevant to the overclocking problem, so worth mentioning it here, in my opinion.

As a forum mod, I see no problem with sutty's two threads being separate. We do have a "report to mod" option on every post - if you think something needs raising for moderation in the future it's better to use that, rather than kludge up a thread

I think you're misreading. Easy to do - maybe I am, but I think the query here is about why the card is downclocking.

ive changed psu and there is still a whine,
i can deal with it though.
