Old 5770 starting to struggle a bit

Hey all, I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card for somewhere in the sub-£200 region (obviously, the cheaper the better). I'm not bothered if it isn't the newest, but my old one is a few years old now and is getting quite noisy as I have to ramp up the fans to play anything. A quiet gpu that overclocks nicely at a budget is what I'm after, so could anyone offer any suggestions?
    Thanks

An HD7850. It's one of the best cards around in terms of price and performance, and it meets all your requirements!

Hi, what kind of games want more horsepower that your 5770 is struggling to cope? It's still fairly respectable. You could alternatively get a second 5770. What's your res/rest of your spec/what games do you play?

Thanks for the speedy reply! I don't mind waiting a bit, so could you give any recommendations on price levels I should be looking for?

It isn't so much that it can't play things (as it happily spits out Max Payne), but that I can't use maximum settings and it's very loud too. I can't imagine it lasting much longer and want some idea of what is good right now. Which specs would you like, as I'll have to poke around inside to check?

Well, since you said below £200 I've recommended the best option that's near that - the 7850 goes for about £180, but it's extremely powerful for the money and I think the best option around £150-£200 currently. You'd be able to play just about any game at high or max settings up to 1920x1200 with good performance.

lol 1440p is probably the problem. Still works pretty nicely though.

Thanks very much teppic. So if I were to stretch a bit higher, is there anything that's a massive improvement before the £300 point?

Not really, as the HD7850 is part of AMD's latest range, and is priced really well. Unless you want to play games like BF3 at max settings you're not going to need anything higher for a single display.

Re: Old 5770 starting to struggle a bit

yeah i was wondering. well yeah a 5770 just wouldn't put out max settings at that res. and although cheap, another 5770 in cf would lack the vram.

without a doubt you should spring on the 7850, though you wouldn't be maxing out every game. there's nothing else in your budget that comes close though, unless you could stretch just a tiny bit from 300 to 320 and get a gtx 670. bar that there's no similarly priced competition given you can overclock the tits off a 7850. i'd just get one and oc it.

Thanks very much you two. Are there any versions of it with noticeably better fans to keep it quiet?

As long as you steer clear of reference models you should find they're all pretty quiet. Here's one example:

The PSU is a Corsair 750. That card sounds excellent teppic. Thanks so much for all the help with this

Re: Old 5770 starting to struggle a bit

The HD7850 seems to be able to be overclocked a decent amount AFAIK. Many people are hitting GTX580 level speeds. The GTX660 should also be out also in the next month or two I suspect.

    Edit!!

What CPU does the OP have??

Re: Old 5770 starting to struggle a bit

I'm on an i2500k. I was looking around and heard people were overclocking the 7850 by as much as 50% which is pretty insane. I imagine the GTX660 will be pretty pricey by comparison though

Re: Old 5770 starting to struggle a bit

It sounds like your system would be really well suited to an HD7850. If you wanted a bit more performance then you'd probably need to go to a GTX 670 to make it worth spending the extra. Don't bother with an HD7870, they're too expensive.
