Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
Hey guys new member here :)
I'm really busy at the moment but I've been looking to upgrade my graphics card from my HD4870 to something newer better :P
the only boundries I have are cash ones, the card should preferably be below about £330, so I dont really know what card to get, the prevalent one to me has been the GTX670, but I'm not sure if I should just save a £100 and get the GTX580 to get a better bang for buck. Also how do AMD's current offerings compare with the GTX670 for around £320?
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
whats the rest of your machine? cpu/ram/board and psu?

I would also add what resolution are you playing at? What games do you play? Loads or a specific few? As there are some games that favour Nvidia over AMD and vice versa
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
I think what type of games I play is irrelevent a good PC gamer will play all games :P (as I do) the rest of my rig is:
Intel i7-920
ASUS P6T SE
Powercolour HD 4870
6gb DDR3 1600MHz
1tb Hard Drive Spinpoint F3
Asus Xonar D2 Soundcard
and a Corsair Obsidian 800D case
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
Anything around these would be ok
AMD HD7850 upwards
Nvidia GTX560Ti 448 upwards
But this all depends on what PSU you have in your case whats the +12v Rail amps like on your PSU
hope this helps
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
If you can afford a GTX670 then get a GTX670 it is quite frankly awesome value for money if you want to play max settings on a high resolution.
The 670 will also draw less power than a 560 Ti and no more than your current 4870 while still being vastly faster.

What he said. If you can afford a 670 then you should definitely get one, stock performance is within 5% of 680s (I think) and some can OC to perform better than 680s! They also perform better than 7970s a lot of the time (not OCd), consume barely any power (for a high end graphics card), are quiet, stay quite cool and are of the new generation, so more/better features and guaranteed driver support!
Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention, if you do want to get a 670, can you not stretch your budget a little? The Gigabyte Windforce (LN44995 on Scan) is currently £328.40 on Scan and is the second best 670 IMO and the Asus DirectCU II (LN45111 on Scan) is currently £346.40 on Scan and is the best 670 IMO.
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
I have thev670 ftw from Eva, great cards. I came from 580's and there is a massive performance difference.
670's would be my choice
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
Isn't everyone even a little bit curious to what sort of PSU the guy has before surgesting high end cards :)

OP said he is currently using a HD4870, which consumes more power when idle than the 670 and about the same when at load, according to AnandTech anyway.

Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
A 670 (esp the Asus DrirectCUII one) can easily run on a 620w thats about 4 years old with no problems on an SB i5@4.6 with multiple drives and fans. Judging by his specs on his stats he has a 1050w OCZ, so he would be able have 3 of those 670s without any problem whatsoever power wise lol

You can get the GTX 670 from Dabs for around £290 (Palit), they are offering discounts on purchases above £199.
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
I've come from an sli GTX 560 to a single Gigabyte 670 ... I'm one happy camper. SLI is too much of a PITA IME. Noisy even when running well.
Loving the price of these guys ...

I even had cause to contact their support and that was good too.
Have I mentioned I'm impressed with oyyy and the gigabyte 670 !
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
Be wary that the reference 670s have noisy coolers. A lot of people have complained about them. The Gigabyte custom cooler is really quiet, and comes to £320 at Dabs (and a bit cheaper in the post above!). I'd definitely go for that over a reference model.
A side point: the 670 doesn't really compare to a 7970 in terms of hardware. The release 7970 drivers were a bit crappy, and the reference models underclocked.
Re: Reccomendation for a new Graphics card
AMD have updated their drivers and while it makes a big difference in some games, it makes little to no difference in others.
In BF3 for example the 670 still wins by well over 10% (53fps vs 60.9fps).

There are actually some pretty good deals on 7970s atm, so it pretty much comes down to which games you play, certain titles favour Nvidia, others favour AMD.
