If you change it, and you're using a TFT monitor with DVI, or just a TFT in general, does it affect anything?

Nope.
TFT's dont have refresh rates in the same ways as CRT's do. TFT's are flicker free (or should be).
Butuz
So running my TFT @ 60Hz won't offer ANY difference (performance, response) whatsoever?
Why is it that TFT manufacturers advertise refresh rates, for example the optimal resolution of mine is 1280x1024@75Hz ?
They're talking about the analogue > digital converter. They'll always recommend 60hz in that case because it offers the best image quality (less stress on components that can't be displayed by the LCD anyway).
DVI is locked at 60hz regardless of what you may attempt to set.
Check Toms Hardware for some good articles on how LCDs (and DVI) work.
Why in that case do most TFT monitors advertise an optimal setting of 75Hz? Or is that when operating on the VGA input?
Thats probably for only when they are on analogue (VGA output)Quote:

DVI should as Boogle said, be locked at a certain speed (not sure if its 60 or 70Hz)
