    Yet again... nVidia vs Ati

But this time, from a bit different approach...

Well somehow, I already answered this question for myself, but I'm curious about your opinions.
My rig at home is a half workstation/half gaming rig, and since I'm not just playing games, but do work (3d modeling, animation, bit of rendering the usual 3d stuff) I only buy nvidia cards.

Why? That's the question for me/you. (first thing first, i don't buy quadro/firepro card, mainly because i don't have that much money plus i stil llike playing games (i know they capable, but... meh))

    So

Nvidia: They constantly working on new technologies, innovations which are useful, not only for gamers, but for nearly every industry (gaming (obviously), animation, etc, etc..)
They're not flawless, and they made mistakes like many of us, but they work appealing.

Ati: Make powerful cards for gamers and... ? Do they have any useful technology if you dont want to just play games and watch movies.

As you can see I'm a bit biased toward nvidia, but this is why i'm asking your opinions.

Please don't start right away with "nvidia GTXxxx card much better than ati HDxxxx blah blah blah", as my goal is not to "reveal" which card is miracoluosly the best
Are those researches useful for a mere human (an average Joe) like me, you, they, or it's just dust in the eyes, and the gamers only want more and more power?

Maybe it's a dumb bulls***, but i'm really curious, am i the only one who feels this way...

AMD is moving much more towards GPU accelerated applications than nvidia's consumer cards. If you look at AMD's 12.7 driver blog you'll see a lot of detail about this sort of stuff:

hmm, interesting. But still don't see any upcoming great feature for amd, from other developers. For eg, maya have nvidia based dynamics and hopefully more to come, but no chance for amd. It seems "they" don't see any potential in amd cards or maybe am i too blind... There's not only gamers and office users out there who use pc...

Thanks for your reply, i'll dig deeper, who knows, maybe i missed something

Re: Yet again... nVidia vs Ati

Welcome to the forums. Interesting first post.

To answer your question, yes, AMD seem to be doing just as much innovating in other areas as nVidia. And unlike nVidia, they seem to be innovating in a way that is more available for everyone to gain from, including nVidia customers, for example their work on openCL (adobe, handbrake and so on), forward rendering techniques (see leo demo) etc etc.

What nVidia are great at is developer support - I would love AMD to be able to do the same kinds of things. They're improving, but they're nowhere near the same level. On the other hand you could argue it's better to get the functionality in the core stuff for everyone than provide it case-by-case afterwards, so philosophically, AMD probably have the edge.

Re: Yet again... nVidia vs Ati

Maybe I was too blinkered, mainly because of the old bugs, that bugged me (constant battle with ati and opengl >.>) But it's time to research, what happens there, maybe something good (i'm a bit fogy, and if something dissappoint me, it's hard to trust in it again...) I hear good things about them nowadays.
