Cheap Graphics Cards that still Suprise you

My vote is the Radeon 9000 oem.

Available for not alot of money, with 128mb of quite slow memory on them, they still do a sterling job of most games on the shelves. Its not the Pro version...just a regular, unbranded OEM offering that I would happily put in most people's PC's cos they are 100% reliable, have good drivers, look sharp and do colour 3d very well.

    What about you?

9500 from Retek. Even if it doesn't mod to a Pro it still shifts somewhat. Can't complain for £30-ish.

Play a half-life engine based game in OpenGL on a Voodoo 3... you'll wonder what's wrong with every card invented since then.

ive not found a cheap gfx card that can surprise me yet...all have poor performance in the latest games, and perform admirable on games based on old engines [eg the q3 engine, the q2 engine [aKa the half life engine]]

Must admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the Powercolor Rad 9550 I picked up for £40 a couple of weeks back.

TBH, I only wanted something with decent 2D IQ, but it's not too bad in 3D either

You know, I think the card that has suprised me the most in recent times has been the 9600SE - Despite being crippled by a 64-bit memory bus it still did a pretty good job in older titles of running at 1024x768 with AF, and sometimes you could squeeze some AA into the mix too. Sure, it isn't going to be up to much for a Doom 3 or Far Cry, but for the price it coped admirably with a lot of the stuff I threw at it.

The Albatron ti4680 Turbo, basically its a ti4200 8x agp tweaked to the high hills and then you can clock it more, currently its running at 350/730 and only jumped 3c, its an amazing card, starting to show its age though on far cry, stutters a bit but other than that all games run like a dream on it, friday we will see how doom 3 handles it. Was only £120 at the time two years back now can be had on ebay for pennies, a very worth while card.

Still got my agp voodoo 3 and that just owns with the older games, shame nvidia bought 3dfx out as it would be impressive to say the least to see what they had on the market these days.

    voodoo 2 card

bought many years ago for about 50 quid and 4 pints and still gives some excellent performance at times.
