If you have to buy right now, yes, a 7950 is great, or to save some more money a 7870 is nearly as fast in games (less fast for compute though).
Alternatively pick up something cheap second hand to tide you by until the 660ti release which should be right up there in terms of performance as well.
Easy, judge for yourself - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU12/372
Do you have a specific price range that you're looking at?
High-ish end: Gigabyte GTX670 Windforce 3x
Mid: MSI GTX560ti Frozr III
Low: GTX550ti
Hi Rob4001, The question you also need to think about is what type of games you will be playing. As some games are better ona AMD card and some on Nvidia card.
As the link above shows some games look better on a AMD i.e cryiss 2, while others battlefield 3 look better on Nvidia . i.e fps but when it comes to Direct X11 Nvidia win's on most games apart from Total war and Metro 2033 and then its only by a couple of frames, if that is what you want to judge games on fps alone.
So it can be just down to what brand you like and the amount of money you are wanting to spend.![]()
In the end I opted for 7950 I was too impatient to wait for 660ti & 670 too pricey. I am happy with it not an fps freak so long as everything playable on high settings I don't mind. Been a while since I had an ATI card my last one was ATI 9800 pro going back a bit there!
Another bit of food for thought; are you going to add a second monitor or upgrade your monitor in the future? You might want to get the 7970 for some room to play with.
i spent ages reading one review after another - to cover myself for the long haul i got a gigabyte wind force hd7970 - its a cracker!
