Bah, laptops aren't for games. I've got a 9700 in my lappy but i never use it for games. Plus, the mobile drivers have issues with games.

Is this the same core as the 9800Pro ? If so, thats amazing !!

Could fit the bill perfectly as I've been looking for a beast of a gaming maching in a smaller form factor than a desktop/shuttle.

It probably won't be. My 9700 is the 64MB version and has lower clock speeds i think. It just has the same core architecture or something iirc.

Hmmmm, well the Mobility 9800 looks like the real deal, featuring 8 texture pipes, 4 vertex shaders, full 256bit memory bus Plenty of mobile gaming grunt there - so long as the lappy is run from the mains.

Well I've just rang Dell and Rock to check availability. Dell has a lead time of 3 weeks for this GPU and Rock reckon it will be Xmas before they have 'em. Both assured me that the 256 MB was overkill and that the 9700 was all that was needed even for gaming several years into the future. In factthe nice chap from Dell gauranteed me that the 128 MB 9700 would suffice for all gaming for at least five years hence.

Is that just becuase they don't have any, or is this true? Me being a newbie I thought it prudent to ask.

    Ta folks.

    Good for 5 years... LOL

Not even the 6800ultra and x800xtpe are good for more than 2-3 years.

Mobile 9700... already borderline performance with the latest games IMO. I'll give it 9 months before you are looking at budget games.

If you want a portable gaming solution stick with a shuttle, TFT screen and some carry bags and go for either the x800pro or 6800GT graphics cards.

this mobility 9800 is as good as a 9800pro. it is based on an 8 piped x800 so supports 2.0b, 3dc etc and is built on < 150nm of the 9800s, thats how come they can fit it in there. clocks should be around 350/300 but with 256bit ram 300 is plenty!
