Worth selling gpu for upgrade next year?

I currently have no pc...sold all of its bits minus the GPU which is a msi gtx 580 twin frozr ii,

Now i know im going to get approx 250+ for the gpu, i intend on building a new system next year. I was going to keep the gpu for this upgrade but is it worth it? there is so many new ones now and seems it may be a waste of time holding onto it and as its not being used....

So thoughts?? keep it or sell it?

Its value will start to plummet, when the GTX660 non-TI is released and the GTX660TI drops in price. Already the HD7950 can be had for around £230 to £240.

Re: Worth selling gpu for upgrade next year?

Well this is what i figured, and for now im getting by on the laptop which does the job playing games just fine, such a shame really, but suppose if i upgrade next year a new gpu will naturally be a better choice maybe something a little less high end mind!

No disrespect but I think you will be struggling to get 250+ (I'm assuming we are talking sterling here) for your card. The average on Ebay over the last couple of weeks has been around the £200 mark (EG. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1809517904...84.m1423.l2649) and out of this you have to take P&P (assuming you can keep your parcel under 2kg, then even this is almost £10 for Next day delivery) and then there's 10% auction fees. So the realistic return is more like £170 cash in hand.

The reason why I know this, is that I've just sold one for a quick cash sale at £150! Though first to admit I wanted a quick sale and was doing a forum friend a favour (not this forum). Slightly lower than I wanted but concerned that a price war on current gen graphics cards is starting to break out and could not be bothered with selling on Ebay. Especially since they now hold your payments for 21 days for consumer electonics!

Unluckily there's nothing that drops in price faster than previous generation top tier graphics cards.

Good luck though if you do decide to sell You may be able to find someone to part with more cash that maybe doesn't know better.

PS. There are loads coming up on Ebay at silly money but they then don't usually sell. One's with £200+ starting prices, are not even getting bids on them. Though there's always the chance that a couple of bidders will go mad trying to out bid each other.

I agree you have to remember the next buyer generally has no warrenty and as you can pick up new 580's WITH warrenty from £200-250 that devalues even the best of the used cards hard. So although you may find a mug who pays £250-300 for a used 580 (GL with that). You most probably won't.

So you can either use it till something even better than 670-7950 arrives, buy something low end to tide you over and sell the card, or just sell the card and keep the cash! but when ever you buy a top tier GPU remember your lucky to get 50% of the retail value you paid 12-16 months later which can be made worse by new cards arriving.

Do bear in mind with the laptop that generally have lower screen res so the mobile GPU's can cope (if they don't, high AA_AF are a thing of the past till you switch back to a desktop) and the lifespan of the gaming laptops is normally 1-2 years unless you are good at taking them apart and cleaning them as the heat they generate kills them pretty quick. So building even a cheap desktop to host the GTX 580 for gaming when at home and saving the laptop for 'best' i.e. when you can't access your desktop will make it last way longer.

'Yes, hello! I would like to buy a GPU with no warrenty that costs more, runs hotter and gets less FPS than a new one with a warrenty please! So your GTX 580 cost you £440 last year? £300 sounds like a bargain then! I believe you when say you didn't overclock the bandits out of it! Do you have a CPU as well I hear those Pentiums are super fast and I have £300 ready for one of them as well!'

If you think your stock GTX 580 1.5GB is worth £300 and I've seen a few people on forums think that, that's the sort of buyer you need.

Even at the current price, you may need a lot of patience to sell it, unless you can sell it to a friend/family member. As you said its unused right now so keeping it would be a waste.

If you could get 180-200 for it, that could get you a decent card down the line. Laptop should be fine as long as you watch dust buildup, also recommend a notebook cooler if you play for long hours.

    Indeed.

You could be lucky... But there are loads on Ebay not reaching their reserve price because folks have over priced them.
EG. another card that I was watching on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008085851...84.m1423.l2649

One of the biggest problems, is that there are just too many decent cards out there (with similar performance to the 580) that can be had new for around £250 (EG. the AMD 7950 as mentioned above). And the longer you hold onto it, the bigger the chance that a price war will break out between AMD and Nvidia coming up to Christmas, thus eroding the value of the 580 even more. Just part and parcel of life in the PC fast lane

Just sold a Msi GTX 580 Twinn Frozr 3 on Ebay and only got £185 for it. Around what I expected to be honest.

Lol true but then at the time they decide to buy some one may jump out and say its not worth it blablabla. So probably eBay is your best bet.

The Time to sell a GTX 580 was before GTX 680 arrived after that it's a sliding scale of pain. We are now at the point where you might just want to give it a good a home so you give a good deal to family or friends. Of course for about £250 you could add a budget Sandy bridge mobo-cpu-cooler-ram bundle 400-500w half decent PSU, PC budget gamer case to it and restore it as a desktop for apps and hardcore games again and then use or sell that! Sometimes you may gain more value that way. Let's be honest that's a better games PC than many big OEM's will sell you for £1k. Doing that may net you £250 for the card £50 for your build and refund the £250 you spent on the bits.

Great idea DLUK, I wish I had thought of that before I sold my card, and you are right, the GTX 580 prices are on a sliding scale, everyone wants the 600 series
