Need a new GPU to replace failed 9800GT - advice needed please

Hello, I need to get a new GPU because my current one, nvidia XFX 9800GT 512Mb, has just left the building. I want to stay nvidia because I know the drivers work well with my os. I run Linux.

    My pertinent system details are
    • PSU: corsair HX620
    • System: Core I7 920(D0) at 4GHz (ASUS p6T-Deluxe - does PCIE2.0 x16), 12Gb RAM.
    • Displays: (a) 1920x1200 DVI-D (b) 1600x1200 DVI-D. (display (a) can move to HDMI).
    • Uses: software development, web, writing, photo editing, video transcoding, etc.
    • No gaming but I occasionally run the X-Plane flight simulator.

I'd like to avoid bumping up the idle power consumption of my system as it runs a few servers that I sometimes need to leave up for longer periods. My current setup with the 9800GT (rated 105w max) is pulling about 230W off the mains plug. Ideally I'd get a step up in performance when running the flight sim. I can spend on this but I don't want to if I don't need to. I don't want to spend £200 if I can get a card meeting my needs for half that. Again, apart from the sim, I don't play games.

I've been reading for hours and the specs of Nvidia cards follow no logic that I can see. Reading seems to point at a GTX460 such as the EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 SuperClocked Graphics Card - 1GB (£116 at scan (LN43069). But should I go better, paying a little more?

I've been reading about different architectures: fermi and kepler and about the 4xx, 5xx and 6xx series of cards but it isn't clear how the cards rank in order of performance. Some cards (like the GTX 550Ti) would appear inferior to the 9800GT when comparing specifications.

Finally, the 9800GT is a single slot-width card. I am not sure if any of today's cards come in a single slot-width (to avoid losing a mobo expansion slot that I may sometime want to use).

Any help/guidance would be much appreciated, thanks...

Looking at the requirement for X-Plane, I would go with an AMD card.....they list 4 and 5 series nVidia as "corruptions being investigated".

The requirements are low.....in fact very low. I would go with some simple and cheap like a 6670 with GDDR5 or if you want to get something a bit beefier, a 7750
    Main PC: Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 3960X@4.5GHz / Antec H1200 Pro / 32GB DDR3-1866 Quad Channel / Sapphire Fury X / Areca 1680 / 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Gold 2 / Corsair 600T / 2x Dell 3007 / 4 x 250GB SSD + 2 x 80GB SSD / 4 x 1TB HDD (RAID 10) / Windows 10 Pro, Yosemite & Ubuntu
    HTPC: AsRock Z77 Pro 4 / 3770K@4.2GHz / 24GB / GTX 1080 / SST-LC20 / Antec TP-550 / Hisense 65k5510 4K TV / HTC Vive / 2 x 240GB SSD + 12TB HDD Space / Race Seat / Logitech G29 / Win 10 Pro

Here is a review of the single slot HD7750:

    http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphi...vtx3d-hd-7750/

The HD6850 is better value than the GTX460 and can be had much cheaper. It is similar speed and even consumes less power. The cheaper HD6870 cards can be had for around £120 and sometimes some GTX560 non-TI cards and these are a better choice than a GTX460. However,be careful about the GTX560SE cards for around £100,as it can at times not be very clear that a GTX560SE is being sold! HD7850 1GB cards can be had for around £135 too.

HandBrake in future builds will support OpenCL acceleration, and the HD7000 series is pretty good at this it seems. As you don't game that much the HD7750 looks a good choice IMHO.

Thanks for that and I'll dig into that review now. Do your AMD recommendations come from experience on Linux? Is that with multiple monitors ?

Re: Need a new GPU to replace failed 9800GT - advice needed please

    Which Linux distro is it?
My prior experience with ATI on Ubuntu was sketchy but that was with an old X800 and an old distro version - otherwise i've typically run Nvidia.
Since the AMD merger/takeover, AMD's opened up the drivers to the community and as far as i know the support's pretty good for newer and common cards. Thing to do would be to run it by your distro's official forum too, using the 7750 or a 6870 as an example. That should get a response and any horror stories / fixes if applicable should come through.

Re: Need a new GPU to replace failed 9800GT - advice needed please

It looks like it's pretty well covered:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Catalyst
The choice between open and proprietary from the repo's will help too, especially as you've stated that gaming isn't a priority.
As the 7 series is fairly new, like i said, best to run it by the Arch forums to see if anyone has experience - just to be sure.
