    GTX 460 768MB to GTX 480

    Quick question.

I'm about to buy the GTX 480 for maxing BFBC2/BF3 etc -- resolution will be 1440x900.

What sort of framerates should I expect vs my current GTX 460? And is it a worthy upgrade?

Also how much noisier will a stock cooled GTX 480 be compared to my GTX 460 Cyclone? Energy usage is a non-issue for me.

Nope, the brand new one. Don't want to take the gamble on refurbished GPUs, especially as hot as the GTX 480.

Not worth it. Pre-overclocked HD7850 cards can be had for that and the recent AMD driver updates have improved performance too. HD7870 cards can be had for £180(basic ones though).

If you really need to get a Nvidia card I suspect the GTX660 non-TI might be better in the game than a GTX480. Also, both the GTX660TI and HD7950 are starting to move towards the £200 mark.

I don't want to switch to AMD as PhysX and older game performance is going to tank (and wiping Nvidia's drivers is going to be far more hassle than it's worth, seeing as I'm going to switch back to Nvidia with their next series of cards anyway).

And I've heard way too many complaints about Kepler's current state of drivers to even consider them. GTX 400 series have the most mature drivers at the moment, which is the reason I want to upgrade, and the GTX 480 looks like the best value card by a long way, especially when taking into account its original price tag of £399.

I still think it is not worth it. TBH,if I were you I would just bear with the card you have now. Then spend it on something half decent at a later date.

I also think if you had the GTX460 1GB you would be in a better position now too,so don't waste your money.

Also,I think the driver installation comment you made is a bit weird - I have changed between brands and so have friends,it really has not caused issues.

Any idea what sort of playable settings I'm going to have to use on BF3 to play multiplayer on my crappy old GTX 460?

Have you tried overclocking it a bit?? That would be the first port of call.

Yep, can get it to about 900MHz. But BF3 needs more VRAM than shaders, I doubt my OC will have much effect.

    Re: GTX 460 768MB to GTX 480

I just moved from a GTX570 to a HD7870. I downloaded the ATI drivers in preparation, uninstalled the nVidia drivers, shutdown, replace card, installed ATI drivers, rebooted. Took about 10 minutes all in, hardly a hassle.

If you want to pay £160 for a hot, power hungry card, giving less performance and less vRAM than the modern AMD price-equivalent, please go right ahead, I'm not going to argue with you.

Your GTX460 will run comfortably with medium details @ 1440 x 900 res without AA

I would try what cptwhite_uk says first,ie, run at 1440X900 at medium without AA. From looking at the videos,I suspect keeping textures to medium with no AA and other settings at high might be doable.

    Edit!!

    From the second video:

"A full round (that I have played) of conquest on Tehran Highway. Settings are all on High except Textures which are on medium (RAM limitation - the game stutters and freezes if I set it to High). No AA.

    Framerate:

    Min: 35
    Avg: ~50
    Max: 70"

"Sorry, I forgot to mention. Every video I film is at 1680x1050, as it's my monitor's native resolution. Recording does take a few fps here and there, but not much, on average 5-8 fps. It's worth mentioning that I did a system reinstall and have actually gained 5-10fps in BF3. It now averages closer to 60fps on most maps."

Thing is, I NEED anti-aliasing in everything I play, most of all a game as good looking as BF3. And a 7870 is £200, and from what I've read pretty even vs a GTX 580 depending on the game. I already said power consumption is a non-issue for me.

Sorry on second thought, I'm thinking of getting that refurb. Any objections before I buy it?

The chap in the second video uses the same card as you but at 1680X1050. His card is rendering around 36% more pixels than yours at 1440X900. He has not overclocked it either. So try 1440X900,all medium with 2XAA with the latest drivers. Playing around settings does not take much time.

Regarding, the refurb it only comes with a 1 year warranty and is a few quid cheaper today:

Thank you very much! Bought it brand new after all, £40 quid difference between used and new is a no brainer. Also at £149 nothing else comes close to the GTX 480 in performance/buck from AMD or Nvidia. I can live with the heat and power consumption, as my power bill is shared anyways (9 other people in our massive 10 room house).

Will be buying a new monitor in a week or so as well to go with the GPU. Cheers.
