    Hd7970

So i've been told that bang for buck, i'm better to get myself an HD7970 in my new rig which I should be ordering in a couple of days, but of course, looking through scane site, there's a lot of them to choose from. Whats the main differences to be aware of?

The only thing I do know is that I need a dual-dvi connection, but other than that I just want the best for the money, so not neccesarily the most expensive. Oh and I'd like one thats fairly quiet if possible.

One thing i've heard folk talking about is that the 7970 can be overclocked fairly easily. If its something youve never done before is it easy enough to do with little risk or is it better to leave well alone?

You want to look for the Asus Direct CUII / MSI Twin Frozr 3 / HIS IceQ / Gigabyte Windforce models they're your best bet.

    Re: Hd7970

I have the Windforce 7970. It's silent at idle but reasonably audible at full chat. OTOH it OC's like a greyhound on crack. Mine is currently sitting on 1100 GPU 1400 Mem.
OCing is as easy as opening the Catlyst control centre built into the drivers, selecting 'Overdrive', and sliding the controls provided to the right. There is very very little risk to OCing in this manner as it does not touch the voltage used by the card.

Yeah its more at idle really I suppose, when in a game or whatever, I'd have earphones on all the time anyway. Its more so that when im sat working its not really loud.

But you can get them anywhere. I got mine from Aria at the time.
The DCu is good too, and appraently quieter still. But it's more expensive and a triple slot cooler.

Shop around for the best prices.

    Thanks, user error obviously!

Problems is I was going to going down the route of getting a full system so would have to get it all from the same place, thats why I need to check scan have it.

    Re: Hd7970

No probs. Bear in mind that anything you order that is not in stock will delay the build as they wait for parts. (This applies to all system builders.)

    Re: Hd7970

Keep an eye on Scan's today only page as well, only have an XFX model on offer today, which is not a premium brand imo, but tomorrow, who knows?

The Asus is the best model in stock imo:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-a...x-display-port

Or if you were desperate to save a few quid you could try amazon:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0072FAZP...SIN=B0072FAZPQ

Not a huge saving, but it's not like a graphics card is difficult to install and Amazon are just as reliable as Scan.

Stay away from XFX. They're usually cheaper for a reason.

+1 on XFX they make there cards to last 12 months if your lucky and their RMA is pretty soddy in my experience.

The dual fans cards generally run more silent or allow you to get a bigger OC. They can be very handy if you go CF at a later date as they generally cool better in multi GPU installations inside your PC case. So your normally looking at £20-30 more for them but they may allow you to use a cheaper case less decent case fans and last a bit longer as they stay cooler. Always check reviews as some of the dual-tri models are not much better than stock (XFX) and others are much better (Asus, MSi, Gigabyte, Sapphire)

    3XS i7 2600k 4.9 Ghz, P67, FT02 SE, MSi GTX 680, 4GB DDR3, OCZ Revo 2 x2 PCIE SSD 240 GB, G930 7.1.

    Re: Hd7970

There's basically no difference in performance between manufacturers - some come pre-overclocked, but you can do that yourself so it's not really worth paying more for (unless it also comes with better cooling). Go for whichever has the best/longest warranty. Fan noise might also be something to consider.

Only two quid less than scan ?
They're a drop shipper. i.e. they only order after you've paid and act as a middle man. Good luck with any customer service.
